Ze wstępu autora: W Capri, na zwaliskach willi Tyberiuszowych, powziąłem pierwszą myśl tego opowiadania, które (przejąwszy się epoką, na gruzach jej widomych jeszcze), ułożyłem ze wszelkich dostępnych mi źródeł, z tą przyjemnością, jaką sprawia badanie odległych a mało nam znanych czasów i pełnych życia postaci, których imiona brzmią jeszcze do dziś dnia wspomnieniami niezatartymi. Nie przedsiębrałem powieści; chciałem tylko w szeregu obrazów charakterystyczniejszych odmalować tę chwilę, dla całej ludzkości stanowczą, która przedziela dwa zupełnie odmienne światy, dwie wielkie epoki żywota dziejowego. Nie ośmieliłem się też porwać na historyę, którą już raz skreśliło energiczne pióro Tacyta z siłą niezrównaną. Z dzisiejszego naszego stanowiska, te pierwociny chrześcijaństwa, wśród rzymskiego świata, przedstawiały mi nad wszystkie zajmujący moment, nadzwyczajnym przeciągający urokiem. Na nieszczęście, szczupła garstka imion i podań została nam z tej epoki. Akta pierwszych męczenników prawie nic nie dostarczają do tego czasu; trochę w Filonie i Józefie, w Aktach Apostolskich, w późniejszych pisarzach, Euzebiuszu, Tertulianie, w żywotach świętych i tradycjach miejscowych oto wszystko co pozostało z tej tajemniczej chwili. Historia Kościoła w pierwszym wieku pełna jest cudów i mroku; strona też ta obrazu naszego jest równie tajemniczą i epizodyczną... kolebkę osłania ciemność, której fantazja rozdzierać nie ma prawa. Pogański natomiast świat maluje się nam jasno, z rzeczywistością ziemskich zjawisk, z najdrobniejszymi swojego żywota szczegółami, w Tacycie, Swetoniuszu, Pliniuszu, Senece, w Dionie Cassiuszu i mnogich pism ułamkach, pomnikach, napisach, odnoszących się do tej epoki. Tu znowu wybór tylko był ciężki, a artystyczne połączenie tej rzeczywistości jaskrawej z ideałami mglistymi, nieskończenie trudne. Czerpaliśmy na odtworzenie całości ze wszystkich znanych pomników, użyliśmy wszystkiego co wspomóc mogło, najwięcej jednak opieramy się na źródłach współczesnych, lub jak najbliższych epoki. Zwiedzenie miejsc dało nam gotowe tło i niemal widzenie jawne przeszłości, której tu jeszcze mnóstwo pozostało śladów żywych i wybitnych. Chcieliśmy rzecz naszą dokonać sumiennie przedsięwziętą z miłością prawdy, zaczętą z zapałem, rzucamy z żalem prawie, życząc czytelnikom, aby tyle znaleźli przyjemności w czytaniu tego studium, ileśmy, kreśląc go, doznali; prosimy ich jednak, by nie zapominali, że im wcale nie obiecujemy powieści...

Abrek ze zrozumiałych względów budził uczucie strachu i nienawiści. () Skutkiem rosyjskiego podboju Kaukazu i późniejszych kolonialnych rządów, było podejmowanie przez miejscową ludność oporu w formie walki partyzanckiej. Pojęcie abreka-banity przeszło wówczas znamienną ewolucję. Często abrekami stawali się bowiem ludzie prześladowani przez Rosjan, a nie osoby łamiące zwyczajowe prawo miejscowe.
