Powieść podróżniczo-przygodowa Daniela Defoe z 1719 roku opisująca przygody Robinsona Cruzoe. Do końca XIX wieku była najczęściej wydawaną, tłumaczoną i interpretowaną książką w historii. W sumie doczekała się ponad 700 rożnych edycji i adaptacji. Autor mógł oprzeć swe opowiadanie na prawdziwej historii Alexandra Selkirka. W XX wieku utwór był wielokrotnie ekranizowany, powstało także wiele dzieł luźno nawiązujących do książki, np. film Cast Away z 2000 r.

Akcja rozpoczyna się w 1651 r. Książka opisuje dzieje Robinsona Crusoe, syna kupca w mieście Hull. Robinson nie chce wieść nudnego żywota jak jego ojciec, jako 17-latek ucieka z domu i płynie do Londynu. Ma pecha, gdyż pierwszy statek, którym płynie, rozbija się. Trafia na drugi okręt i tam uczy się sztuki żeglarskiej. Po pewnym czasie, chce wracać do domu, ale kapitan Smith namawia go, by popłynął z nim do Gwinei, a gdy tam dorobi się majątku, zostanie łaskawiej przyjęty przez ojca. Po śmierci kapitana Robinson pomaga wdowie po nim w prowadzeniu interesów. Jednak podczas kolejnej podróży statek zostaje napadnięty, a Robinson, wraz z innymi, wzięty do niewoli mauretańskiej. Po dwóch latach ucieka, wraz ze swym towarzyszem Ksurym i płynie do Brazylii, gdzie staje się plantatorem. Podczas wyprawy po niewolników 30 września 1659 statek się rozbija i Robinson jest jedynym ocalałym. Trafia na bezludną wyspę, gdzie, jak się okaże, spędzi następne 28 lat... Il parvient s'échapper sur un bateau et ne doit son salut qu' un navire portugais qui passe au large de la côte ouest de l'Afrique. Arrivé au Brésil, Crusoé devient le propriétaire d'une plantation. En 1659, alors qu'il a vingt-huit ans, il se joint une expédition partie la recherche d'esclaves africains, mais la suite d'une tempte il est naufragé sur une île l'embouchure de l'Orénoque en Amérique du Sud. Tous ses compagnons étant morts, il parvient récupérer des armes et des outils dans l'épave. Il fait la découverte d'une grotte. Il se construit une habitation et confectionne un calendrier en faisant des entailles dans un morceau de bois. Il chasse et cultive le blé. Il apprend fabriquer de la poterie et élve des chvres. Il lit la Bible et rien ne lui manque, si ce n'est la compagnie des hommes. Il s'aperçoit que l'île qu'il a appelée Speranza , signifiant Espoir, reçoit périodiquement la visite de cannibales, qui viennent y tuer et manger leurs prisonniers. Crusoé, qui juge leur comportement abominable, songe les exterminer, mais il se rend compte qu'il n'en a pas le droit, puisque les cannibales ne l'ont pas agressé et ne savent pas que leur acte est criminel. Il rve de se procurer un ou deux serviteurs en libérant des prisonniers et, de fait, quand l'un d'eux parvient s'évader, ils deviennent amis. Frank Osbaldystone młodzieniec skłócony z ojcem, ponieważ nie chce zajmować się tak jak on handlem, wyjeżdża z Londynu do posiadłości swego stryja Osbaldystone Hall. Drogę przebywa z bardzo strachliwym panem Morrisem, przez którego później spotyka go wiele nieprzyjemności. W Osbaldystone Hall poznaje barona Hildebranda oraz jego synów: Thorncliffa, Dicksona, Wilfrieda, Percyego, Johna i tajemniczego Rashleigha. Dobrze wychowany i wykształcony Frank nie może znaleźć wspólnego języka z wujem i kuzynami, lubiącymi polowania i pijatyki. Jedyną osobą, z którą spędza czas jest Diana Vernon. Wkrótce Frank zostaje oskarżony przez pana Morrisa o kradzież dokumentów państwowych, które miał przy sobie w czasie podróży. Jednak przy pomocy Roberta Campbella szybko udaje się wyjaśnić sytuację i Morris wycofuje oskarżenie. Tymczasem Rashleigh wyjeżdża do Londynu do ojca Franka, by zająć się tam razem z nim handlem. Wokół miss Vernon zaczynają dziać się dziwne rzeczy pojawienie się ojca Vaughana, zaczyna spędzać z kimś dużo czasu w bibliotece... Reszty można się dowiedzieć po przeczytaniu całej książki.
