Typee. A Peep at Polynesian Life
Herman Melville
Basically, it turns out that the Typee tribe untouched by civilization is children of nature, surrounded by the care and warmth of their native land, spending their easy days in the shade of a palm tree, eating the fruits of breadfruit, bananas and coconuts. Here, Melville begins to compare civilized countries with a clearly backward society and concludes that the former are at a lower stage of development. And the natives with their cannibalism and promiscuity are in many ways more advanced and healthy people in social and psychological terms.
Joseph Conrad
First published in 1902, Typhoon can be easily passed as pre-twentieth century literature. Its a short story depicting a ship experiencing a terribly destructive typhoon and coming out of it, but not without coming inch-close to death. Typhoon is a classic sea yarn, possibly based upon Conrads actual experience of seamans life, and probably on a real incident aboard of the real steamer John P. Best. One of the major themes of the novella is the contrast between Conrads characters who are imaginative men aware of the larger issues of life and conscious of the potential for disaster and the literal minded and relatively unaware Captain MacWhirr. MacWhirr is a hard working captain devoted to routine and loyal to the needs of the Nan-Shan and the interests of her owners. The novella classically evokes the seafaring life at the turn of the century. While Macwhirr, who, according to Conrad, never walked on this Earth is emotionally estranged from his family and crew, and though he refuses to consider an alternate course to skirt the typhoon, his indomitable will in the face of a superior natural force elicits grudging admiration.

Buffalo Bill Bohater Dalekiego Zachodu. Niezwykłe przygody pułkownika amerykańskiego W. F. Cody’ego. Buffalo Bill, właściwie William Frederick Cody (ur. 26 lutego 1846, zm. 10 stycznia 1917) – myśliwy, zwiadowca armii amerykańskiej (scout), organizator i aktor widowisk rozrywkowych; bohater Dzikiego Zachodu. Zwiadowca armii USA podczas wojny secesyjnej (1861-1865) i wojen z Indianami (do 1877) w zachodnich stanach USA. W 1883 zorganizował widowisko cyrkowe Wild West Show, przedstawiające wydarzenia z historii amerykańskiego Dzikiego Zachodu i do 1916 prezentował je w Ameryce Północnej oraz Europie Zachodniej; występowali wraz z nim tak znani ludzie Dzikiego Zachodu jak na przykład mistrzyni w strzelaniu Annie Oakley, czy słynny pogromca generała Custera nad Little Big Horn, wódz Dakotów Hunkpapa Siedzący Byk. W 1906 roku, podczas europejskiej trasy, widowisko Wild West Show pokazywano m.in. na terenach dzisiejszej Polski. Na podstawie jego przygód powstał ten właśnie cykl opowiadań, z których jedno zawarte jest w tej oto książeczce. Zachęcamy do lektury.

This was one of several fictional historical works that Doyle wrote during the last five years of the 19th century, as he tried to find something to replace Sherlock Holmes. First published in 1897, this murder mystery relates the story of a young Frenchman, Louis, who, having grown up in England, returns to France at the false invitation of his Uncle Bernac. Louis quickly finds himself in personal danger as well as involved in a conspiracy against Napoleon. Were soon the realm of high adventure with mysterious meetings in desolate places, but once our hero finally met the Emperor, a vast chunk of the novel was given over to a most vivid portrait of the Napoleonic court with walk on appearances by Talleyrand, Josephine and many others.
