Przegląd badań wskazuje, że problematyka wsparcia społecznego funkcjonuje w znacznym rozproszeniu, podczas gdy znaczenie problemów pomagania, wspierania innych dla rozumienia i kształtowania współczesnej rzeczywistości społecznej rodzi potrzebę gromadzenia, porządkowania i integracji dorobku naukowego w tym zakresie. Temu celowi przyświecał pomysł przygotowania opracowania poświęconego współczesnym studiom nad wsparciem społecznym, którego materialnym dowodem jest oddana Czytelnikowi do rąk niniejsza książka. Publikacja jest monografią współczesnych socjologicznych badań nad wsparciem społecznym. Tom obejmuje łącznie 14 opracowań, które są prezentacją wyników studiów empirycznych.
