E. Phillips Oppenheim
A detective and very mysterious story. Mr. Sabin is called out of blissful retirement to search for his missing wife. He believes Lucille to be kidnapped by members of a secret society of aristocrats. It is interesting to watch Mr. Sabin control himself and walk with such dignity and aristocratic bearing and tact, even as he plots to save his own life and reunite with his beloved Lucille. The Yellow Crayon presents a fascinating picture of the political mindset of the day to go along with the twists and turns of the story. Readers of Mr. Oppenheims novels may always count on a story of absorbing interest, turning on a complicated plot, worked out with dexterous craftsmanship.

The Yellow Streak is the first book in the Inspector Manderton series. A wealthy industrialist with a mysterious past, has a group of friends staying with him at his country house in England. He apparently commits suicide, but a good friend of the young woman engaged to the industrialist believes its murder and seeks to find the murderer. Good old fashioned country house novel: sort of locked room, suicide or murder mystery. Highly recommended for people who like to treat a mystery story as a solvable riddle!

He is considered one of the originators of the thriller genre, his novels also range from spy thrillers to romance, but all have an undertone of intrigue. The Zeppelin Passenger is the most audacious German spy story with a strong hint of romance that Mr. Oppenheim has heretofore written.

This is a tale of a single family, told mostly from the point of view of the woman who left comfort to move west and marry her sweetheart. It is also a very nice lens by which we can see the growth and change in this country. Through the Huetts eyes we see the world grow and change, while the patriarch, Logan, clings to his dream of 30,000 cattle. Ends with family starting over after being swindled out of almost a million dollars and two sons being killed in the war. Although the story has some sadness to it, the family demonstrates an ability to overcome all obstacles, including loss of loved ones and family wealth. An inspiring, uplifting story.

W toku realizacji różnych przedsięwzięć w przetargach firma Westinghouse Electric Lamp konkurowała z firmą General Electric Edisona. Nie był to jedyny kierunek działalności Edisona, który już wówczas był potentatem zatrudniającym na całym świecie około dwóch milionów ludzi. Idealizm, wręcz prometeizm Tesli napotkał konkurenta w postaci, która jeszcze wcześniej, w czasie pobierania nauki w Europie stała się dla niego wielką inspiracją. Pragmatyzm Edisona miał twarde podstawy w lekcji życia, którą odebrał. Należy jednak pamiętać, że tak jak obaj trafili do Nowego Jorku bez grosza, tak obaj zrobili w nim zawrotne kariery. Obaj byli zwycięzcami, a zawiązanie się między nimi rywalizacji, wpisywało się w trend kapitalizmu, który wtenczas w Nowym Jorku był bezwzględny. Mimo to należy dostrzec, że fakt ich rywalizacji w czasach, gdy urzędowali po dwóch stronach Piątej Alei w Nowym Jorku stymulował zarówno Nikolę Teslę, jak i Thomasa Edisona do intensywnej pracy i to właśnie konkurencja jest największym motorem rozwoju. Trzeba wiedzieć o tym, że nie za wszystkie z kontrowersyjnych pokazów, które miały miejsce i miały na celu pokazanie niebezpieczeństw stosowania trójfazowego prądu zmiennego poprzez uśmiercanie zwierząt odpowiadał sam Edison, a kwestia niewypłaconych przez niego pieniędzy (chodziło o kwotę rzędu pięćdziesięciu tysięcy dolarów) wywołała w życiu Tesli kryzys, który znalazł jednak dobre zakończenie.
