Z jednej strony religijność niepodlegająca żadnym wahaniom i pytaniom, z drugiej bunt, niezależność sądu, wolność myśli. Ukazując szaleństwo pewnych intelektualnych sądów, czy wręcz fanatyzmu, autor jednocześnie zmusza nas do zastanowienia się nad konsekwencjami całkowitej wolności, zaburzonym boskim porządkiem świata, wywołanym czynem bezinteresownym, sprzecznym z jakąkolwiek logiką. Lochy Watykanu to niewątpliwie najbardziej znana powieść André Gide’a, głównie za sprawą kontrowersji, jakie wywołała: oskarżano ją o herezję i niemoralność, a jej autora odsądzano od czci i wiary. A jednak 30 lat później autor otrzymał Nagrodę Nobla. Przeczytać trzeba koniecznie – książka należy do kanonu literatury, a na dodatek czyta się ją świetnie.
