Phedon to utwór Platona, filozofa greckiego, ateńczyka, twórcy tradycji intelektualnej znanej jako platonizm. Akcja rozpoczyna się w więzieniu, gdzie Sokrates oczekuje na wykonanie wyroku śmierci. Dialog kończy się opisem śmierci Sokratesa, za jego najważniejszą część należy uznać mowę pożegnalną skierowaną do uczniów, w której filozof przedstawia dowody na nieśmiertelność duszy i swoje poglądy na śmierć.

Phedon przedstawia spokojność Sokratesa w więzieniu, z jaką oczekuje śmierci, którą uważa za wybawcę duszy swojej z więzów ciała moc jej krępujących, i niedozwalających tej dzielności, jaką by miała, gdyby się od nich uwolniła. Kiedy umrę, mówi, mam nadzieję, że znajdę na tamtym świecie lepszych ludzi, choć tego z pewnością twierdzić nie mogę, jednak że znajdę dobrych bogów, o tym każdego mogę zapewnić. W rozwinięciu tych myśli powiemy, że jest w nas bez wątpienia coś takiego, co się objawia i daje poznać przez działanie rozumu i woli, trwalsze, doskonalsze od ciała, egzystuje i po jego śmierci. Jest to duch jakiś, który raz wyszedłszy z osłony ciała, wolny, sobie zestawiony, wraca do ducha wiecznego, od którego pochodzi. Czym się wtenczas staje? Czy ma poznanie siebie samego? Czy jest czuły na rozkosz i przykrość? Czy zostaje w jakich stosunkach z duchem sobie podobnym? Są to pytania, na które nie można odpowiedzieć, tylko przez przybliżenie. Rozum może nam tylko dać poznać formę i istotę naszego ducha w tym, co towarzyszy jego objawieniu i rozwinięciu, ale nie może odkryć form, jakie już mógł przybrać, albo zachowuje dla niego przyszłość niezbadana. Do tego zmierza w ogóle cały system Phedona: polega on na rozróżnieniu ścisłym panowania rozumu od wiary, pewności od nadziei.

Debiutancka powieść Macieja Rapy, Phenomen, ukazuje Ziemię po katastrofie tak globalnej, że doszło do załamania wszelkich praw fizyki i biologii przez nieznane dotąd zjawisko. The volume contains a selection of texts presented during the Conference: University – Philosophy as the Foundation of Knowledge, Action and Ethos, which was organized by the University of Łódź (on 11–13th June 2015) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its foundation. The works contained in the volume pertain to very diverse topics, and for this reason the content of the book is divided into four chapters. Chapter one includes essays which present Kotarbinski’s life and scientific work. The second chapter concentrates on some theoretical problems of knowledge and epistemology. In the third chapter, different problems of ethics, religion and theory of action are discussed. Chapter four focuses on contemporary problems in social sciences and humanities and the state of affairs in those fields. The volume juxtaposes various current philosophical problems in a most impressive way.

University studies mean the critical reading of texts, and also reflection. The latter should be stimulated by lectures and tutorials, and by discussion. In an attempt to meet the needs of students, we offer here a handbook (in English) for the study of the philosophy of law. An innovative idea underlies this handbook – teaching an aspect of law through questions and answers. It is based on a philosophical approach to the study of law. In preparing this handbook, the authors have drawn on English-language models – in the first instance, on the Routletge Questions & Answers Series: Jurisprudence 2013–2014 by David Brooke (New York 2013). We have proceeded from a position that the subject of philosophy of law may be dealt with in five sections. These are: (I) methodology; (II) people; (III) approaches; (IV) concepts; and (V) hard cases. The contents of our book reflects this division into parts. At the outset, however, we must mention some reservations. First, this handbook considers problems of contemporary philosophy of law, but it is by no means a handbook of the history of philosophy of law. Second, this handbook has a module-based organization. In the future, it will be possible to change these modules as required. Thus, it is an open-ended offering, which will certainly – and this was part of the project from the start - be subject to further changes, supplements, and modifications in subsequent editions.
