Kiedy umrę, mówi, mam nadzieję, że znajdę na tamtym świecie lepszych ludzi, choć tego z pewnością twierdzić nie mogę, jednak że znajdę dobrych bogów, o tym każdego mogę zapewnić. W rozwinięciu tych myśli powiemy, że jest w nas bez wątpienia coś takiego, co się objawia i daje poznać przez działanie rozumu i woli, trwalsze, doskonalsze od ciała, egzystuje i po jego śmierci. Jest to duch jakiś, który raz wyszedłszy z osłony ciała, wolny, sobie zestawiony, wraca do ducha wiecznego, od którego pochodzi. Czym się wtenczas staje? Czy ma poznanie siebie samego? Czy jest czuły na rozkosz i przykrość? Czy zostaje w jakich stosunkach z duchem sobie podobnym? Są to pytania, na które nie można odpowiedzieć, tylko przez przybliżenie. Rozum może nam tylko dać poznać formę i istotę naszego ducha w tym, co towarzyszy jego objawieniu i rozwinięciu, ale nie może odkryć form, jakie już mógł przybrać, albo zachowuje dla niego przyszłość niezbadana. Do tego zmierza w ogóle cały system Phedona: polega on na rozróżnieniu ścisłym panowania rozumu od wiary, pewności od nadziei.

The volume contains a selection of texts presented during the Conference: University – Philosophy as the Foundation of Knowledge, Action and Ethos, which was organized by the University of Łódź (on 11–13th June 2015) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its foundation. The works contained in the volume pertain to very diverse topics, and for this reason the content of the book is divided into four chapters. Chapter one includes essays which present Kotarbinski’s life and scientific work. The second chapter concentrates on some theoretical problems of knowledge and epistemology.
