Omawia zjawiska wciąż mało rozpoznane: samizdat, tamizdat, sztukę nonkonformistów czy działalność dysydencką na tle panoramy przemian zachodzących zarówno w Polsce, jak i w Związku Radzieckim. Stanowi próbę rekonstrukcji wzajemnych polsko-rosyjskich związków w czasach naznaczonych totalitaryzmem. Zaprezentowana w niej twórczość Anny Achmatowej, Osipa Mandelsztama, Michaiła Zoszczenki, Warłama Szałamowa, Aleksandra Sołżenicyna, Andrieja Płatonowa, Josifa Brodskiego ukazuje inną – wolną i suwerenną duchowo – Rosję. Utwory wymienionych autorów kształtowały świadomość Polaków, a ich walory artystyczne przybliżali tłumacze i propagatorzy literatury rosyjskiej, którzy wbrew obowiązującej ideologii, propagandzie oraz stylistyce pisania o Rosji potrafili odkryć czytelnikom jej nieznane dotąd oblicze.
