Tola wyrasta na bardzo piękną młodą kobietę. Pewnego dnia dziewczyna poznaje niesamowicie przystojnego malarza Jana Stankara. Zakochuje się w nim od pierwszego wejrzenia. Tymczasem swojej niechęci w kwestii tej znajomości nie kryje Kazimierz Łużycki. Kiedy Tola oznajmia stryjowi, iż chce wyjść za Jana za mąż, ten po prostu ją wydziedzicza. Młodzi małżonkowie wyjeżdżają do Warszawy. W stolicy Tola przeżywa koszmar. Mąż przestaje być szybko tym ukochanym mężczyzną, za którego wyszła za mąż. Nie ma weny twórczej. Za wszelkie niepowodzenia zawodowe obwinia Tolę. Gdy rodzi im się córka, jest jeszcze gorzej. Małżonkowie żyją na skraju ubóstwa. Ostatecznie Jan, nie mogąc dłużej znieść niekomfortowej dla siebie sytuacji, opuszcza rodzinę. Wyjeżdża do Paryża, gdzie ma nadzieję odnaleźć chęć do pracy. Natomiast Tola coraz częściej zaczyna myśleć o śmierci...
Stefan Grabiński
Niesamowita opowieść to tom nowel autorstwa Stefana Grabińskiego, zawierający takie tytuły jak Kochanka Szamoty, Na tropie, Spojrzenie, W domu Sary, Przed drogą daleką, Nietykalny oraz Świadek Materna. Uosabia Tatry z kolebką polskości, a przez nie wiedzie wędrowca, będącego alter ego autora. Jednak nic nie jest tu oczywiste: o podnóże Tatr uderzają morskie fale, a gdzieś pod Krywaniem ciągną się fiordy, pośród których pewien książę podróżuje łodzią podwodną. Sam autor o książce wypowiedział znamienne słowa: Najdziwniejsza książka, którą mógłbym napisać, jest o tym, czego nie wiem. Słowo nietota stanowi ludową nazwę rośliny wrońca widlastego, symbolizującej kobietę, a być może także Polskę.

Powieść science fiction Herberta Georgea Wellsa przedstawia perypetie szalonego naukowca, któremu udaje się wynaleźć sposób na uzyskanie niewidzialności. Niestety eksperyment wymyka się spod kontroli, a jego autor pada ofiarą swojego wynalazku znika, ale nieszczęśliwie nie potrafi odwrócić zjawiska. Jako niewidzialny człowiek sieje postrach wśród innych ludzi.

Akcja utworu Niewola tatarska toczy się w pierwszej połowie XVII wieku na południowo-wschodnich kresach Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów. Utwór pisany w formie pamiętnika Aleksego Zdanborskiego. Zdanborski ubogi szlachcic nieszczęśliwie kocha się w córce bogatego magnata, pannie Marysi. By stać się godnym ukochanej, zaciąga się do wojska. Wierzy, iż w służbie wojskowej okryje się sławą i zdobędzie majątek. Wkrótce bierze udział w pierwszej bitwie z Tatarami. Bitwa kończy się zwycięstwem wojsk polskich, jednak Aleksy w pogoni za rozbitym wrogiem oddala się od reszty wojska i sam dostaje się do niewoli. Wódz tatarski Sulejman Aga początkowo traktuje go dobrze, licząc na bogaty okup za jeńca. Okazuje się jednak że Aleksy nie ma pieniędzy...
Ferdynand Antoni Ossendowski
Nieznanym szlakiem to zbiór opowiadań inspirowanych licznymi podróżami Ferdynanda Antoniego Ossendowskiego (18781945). Autor odmalowywał w nich odległe, różnorodne krainy z Europy, Azji i Afryki. W centrum zainteresowania zawsze stawiał jednak spotkanie z człowiekiem doświadczonym przez los, odmiennym, a jednak tak bardzo podobnym. Ossendowski to drugi po Sienkiewiczu najczęściej tłumaczony polski autor. Oprócz opowiadań pisał liczne powieści, szeroko odwołujące się do jego bogatych podróżniczych i życiowych doświadczeń.

Night and Day by Virginia Woolf is her second novel and was published in 1919. But the novel is very forward-looking in its examination of relationships under the stress of the culture shift was occurring in the early 20th century. The story takes place in pre-war England and involves four characters and their relationships. Kathryn Hillbery the middle class privileged girl whose idea of success is marriage. Ralph Denham the middle class lawyer who supports his whole family and looks for his own peace of mind. William Rodney the mediocre poet and the suffragette, looking for the kind of romanticism one finds in books. Mary round out the main characters, involved in womens rights, who regards work as her precept of living. Also in the mix is Kathryns slightly ditzy mother who while working on a book seems to be easily distracted. The characters all work well together.
