W 1890 r. 40-letni wówczas Henryk Sienkiewicz wyruszył w podróż do Afryki. Była to wyprawa myśliwska na południe Czarnego Lądu. Pisarz zapowiedział cykl korespondencji z podróży. Wiadomość ta spotkała się z wielkim zainteresowaniem czytelników. Sienkiewicz wyruszył z Neapolu 25 grudnia 1890 r. Zaopatrzony był w liczne listy polecające, m.in. od lorda Roberta Arthura Salisburyego, wybitnego polityka angielskiego, kardynała Lavigerie, prymasa Afryki, i Arthura Silva Whitea, szkockiego podróżnika i geografa. Trzonem wyprawy miała być miesięczna wycieczka myśliwska w głąb lądu. Punkt wyjścia był Zanzibar. Tom Listów z Afryki obejmuje dwadzieścia trzy szkice. Tylko dwa z nich powstały w czasie samej podróży. Resztę spisał autor po powrocie po kraju. Są to więc raczej wspomnienia niż listy z Afryki. Wyprawa do Afryki miała być dla pisarza chwilową ucieczką od dręczących go problemów obrzydłej codzienności. Tymczasem jak czytamy na kartach wspomnień afrykańskich pisarzowi towarzyszyła stale nostalgia oraz przygnębienie związane z oddaleniem się od rodziny.
