Although Charles Stanfield was a wealthy man he was far from happy. Everything that money could buy was at his command. He had merely to give the order and it would be fulfilled without delay. From a worldly point of view he was an outstanding example of a prosperous man who had fought his way to the top of the ladder of success. By many he was admired for his keen business qualities; by others he was feared and hated. He was considered a hard man, and merciless in any transaction where money was the object of his pursuit. Written in 1927, Fighting Stars is a novel by Archdeacon Hiram Alfred Cody (1872-1948), who was a Canadian author, poet, clergyman and editor.

The book tells about the presence of Quatermain in the Zulus tribe, their military councils and the great battles that the Zulus fought against the British. Edgar Wallace
Emil Louba traded profitably in human souls. When he added Jane Martin to his stock-in-trade, he won the hatred of Hurley Brown-who was soon to be a Power at Scotland Yard. And for Louba, then, the sands were running out... This ones a fairly standard murder mystery by Edgar Wallace mold. The murder is that of the nasty Louba, whos made and lost a fortune. Hes also made lots of enemies over the years so, when hes bumped off with the candlestick in his swanky London apartment, theres no shortage of suspects in fact, even people who arent suspects are offering to help the folk they think might have done it, on the basis that no one deserves to swing for ridding the world of a swine like Louba.
R. Austin Freeman
This little novel is a total departure from the Dr. Thorndyke mysteries, the classic British detective novels that made Freemans reputation. The heroine is a perfectly proper but adventurous young woman named Phyllis, who takes over her cousin Charlies chambers in Clifford Inn. The presence of some of Charlies clothes in the closet gives her the idea of dressing as a man for a fancy dress ball. Unfortunately, Phyllis looks just like the charming Charlie when wearing his clothes, and this gets her into some difficulties, because Charlie is a bit of a scalawag. Phyllis as Phil gets into fights, performs heroic acts and falls in love with a man who thinks shes just his pal. Her adventures are tremendous fun. From impersonating a man to discovering mysterious trap doors, Flighty Phyllis is an entertaining glimpse at the times and trials of a wayward woman.

Louisa May Alcott
Flower Fables is Louisa May Alcotts first book, penned at 16. She created the fanciful stories for the amusement of the daughter of a family friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Miss Alcott loved and was well acquainted with flowers, insects, birds and animals of the meadows and forest. From these beauties she spun adventures of enchanting natures woodland fairies, telling them to children of friends and others. Each fable has a moral of sorts, a captivating way to inspire children to selfless, gentle, loving behavior. Readers meet a cast of elves, fairies, brownies and sprites with such Shakespearean names as Willy Wisp, Moonbeam and Thistledown, and the children who occasionally dally with them. Thinly disguised morality lessons told in an over-upholstered style, they instruct the audience in the importance of various virtues. This is a nice collection of fairy tales that is sure to please young readers and the adults reading to them alike.
