Hanns Heinz Ewers (1871-1943) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, Filmemacher, Globetrotter und Kabarettist. Ewers Geschichten kreisen um die Themen Phantastik, Erotik, Kunst bzw. Künstler und Reisen in exotische Länder. Seine teils äußerst drastischen Darstellungen machten ihn zum skandalumwitterten Bestsellerautor. Eine Gruppe skrupelloser Menschen nimmt eine künstliche Befruchtung an einer Prostituierten vor und pflanzt ihr den Samen eines Gehängten ein. Der Samen stammt von einem Lustmörder und wurde ihm zum Zeitpunkt seiner Hinrichtung entnommen. Dies entspricht jenem Aberglauben, der um die Alraunenpflanze rankt. Die auf diese Weise erschaffene Alraune ist ein Geschöpf mit ganz besonderen Fähigkeiten. Das Mädchen Alraune selbst wird als promiskuitiv veranlagt beschrieben und verursacht den Suizid eines ältlichen Liebhabers. Dann wird sie die Geliebte des Professor Ten Brinken. Er war der Leiter jener künstlichen Befruchtung, die zu ihrer Erzeugung führte.

Auf einer Reise durch die arabische Wüste stoßen sie auf einen geheimnisvollen blinden Seher. Sie helfen dabei, den heiligen Schatz der Glieder zurückzuerobern, was wiederum zur Folge hat, dass sie bald darauf von Beduinen angegriffen werden und Kara gefangengenommen wird. Ein wirklich lesenswertes Buch, auch abgesehen von seinem Abenteuercharakter.

Karl May war einer der produktivsten Autoren von Abenteuerromanen. Er zählt seit mehr als 100 Jahren zu den meistgelesenen Schriftstellern der Welt und der deutschen Sprache. Am Rio de la Plata beginnt für den Erzähler das Südamerika-Abenteuer. In einem von Revolutionen zerrissenen Land bringt ihm seine Ähnlichkeit mit einem dortigen Parteigänger prompt erste Verwicklungen. Friedrich Gerstäcker veröffentlichte eine Vielzahl von Erzählungen, Romanen und vor allem Berichte über seine verschiedenen Reisen, die ihn zu einem der meistgelesenen und bekanntesten Autoren Deutschlands machten. Als Sohn eines gefeierten Tenors wurde ihm die Reiselust quasi in die Wiege gelegt. So war er in Amerika unter anderem als Holzfäller, Viehtreiber, Heizer und Koch auf einem Mississippidampfer, Lehrer und vor allem als (Großwild-) Jäger unterwegs. Er durchstreifte Nord- und Südamerika, die Inselwelt des Stillen Ozeans, Australien. In mehreren Kurzgeschichten erzählt Gerstäcker von seinen Aufenthalten in Amerika. Seit dem Krieg mit den Seminolen (1818) hatten sich die Stämme der nordamerikanischen Indianer ziemlich still und ruhig verhalten und die Regierung selbst vermied natürlich Jedes, was wieder zu Reibungen und Streitigkeiten Anlaß geben konnte. Nichts desto weniger und trotz tausend verschiedenen Freundschaftsversicherungen und geschlossenen Bündnissen, drängte sie die armen Kinder der Wildniß immer weiter und weiter von den Gräbern ihrer Väter zurück, und nahm ihnen sogar, wenn ein paar trunkene Häuptlinge vielleicht ihre Zustimmung gegeben, wieder Strecken hinweg, in deren fortwährendem Besitz sie frühere Präsidenten bestätigt hatten.

The brother and sister of the poor nobleman settle in a simple town and bring a new element to the quiet life of this place, which gives many opportunities for comedy. Ginny Avesham is an attractive heroine, but the author tries so hard to show her kindness to the reader that she overdoes her and makes her a little theatrical. A simple story, with many good characters, but also with life features. Benson gave us a small but pleasant exploration of life in a small town.
