Le roman est sans aucun doute fascinant, avec beaucoup de mysteres et de tournures insidieuses.

Powieść Oliwer Twist to dzieło ukazujące życie XIX-wiecznego społeczeństwa angielskiego i prawa nim rządzące. Tytułowy bohater jest sierotą. Wraz z innymi pozbawionymi rodziny dziećmi został umieszczony w sierocińcu. Cierpi tam głód i zimno. Nieludzkie traktowanie dzieci z przytułku niejednokrotnie kończy się dla nich śmiercią. Oliwer, któremu udało się przeżyć mimo wszystko, w dniu swoich dziewiątych urodzin zostaje zabrany do kolejnego przytułku. Ma w nim zdobyć wykształcenie i nauczyć się pożytecznego rzemiosła. Tu także jest głodzony i poniewierany. Gdy pewnego dnia prosi o dokładkę, zostaje wyrzucony i odtąd musi sobie radzić sam.
