The monograph entitled "The Importance of Universities for Society and Economy. The Experience of Researchers from the Visegrad Group" was made by 28 authors representing 12 universities from the Visegrad Group. The intention of the authors is to answer the question about the role of universities and the relevance of research they conduct for the construction of sustainable societies and modern economies in conditions of volatile the environments. Addressing the problems discussed in this monograph from the perspective of the experience of researchers from Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary, corresponds with the important direction in the development of science, namely its internationalisation. The monograph consists of three parts. The first concerns the functioning of universities and directions in the development of education, as well as the scientific research conducted in the context of the sustainability crisis, and the need to expand the scope of implementation of the sustainable development concept. The considerations included in the second part of the monograph regard academic teaching and areas of research emerging in the context of the ongoing technological progress, particularly visible in the growing use of artificial intelligence, and the need to develop digital competencies. The third part presents the results of research undertaken in view of finding research gaps resulting from changes in the geopolitical and social conditions produced by the COVID-19 pandemic

The Intimate Life of Monica P. is the story of a thirty-something-year-old woman trapped in an unhappy marriage. She loves chatting to her friends as a way to forget her problems and humdrum existence. But behind it all there is a secret even her loved ones don't know about. What is it? This story is amusing, touching and thought-provoking. Note! The ending can literally blow your mind. Ok, let's just cut the bullshit. My name is Monica and I'd like to tell you a rollercoaster of a story about my life. I promise you laughter, tears and sex - mostly good, but unfortunately some bad, too. I will share my innermost thoughts and intimate experiences. As a married woman in my 30s, I realized I needed to finally change something about my life, because I wasn't totally happy with how it'd turned out. I have a decent enough job, but my boss is an obnoxious asshole with a love of cringe-worthy jokes. My freaky husband has a somewhat peculiar fetish I will tell you all about later. My friends are the only thing you could truly envy me. They will never let you get bored. But there is something I need to ask you. Don't let your guys read this book - they are better off not knowing what we really think about them. Monica P.

What is and where is the Islamic World in 2019? If we understand the Islamic World as all Muslim-majority countries, according to the Pew Research Center (2015) we would find 50 such countries with a total population of over 1.8 billion. The highest percentage (91%) of the total population in a region considering themselves Muslim, can be found in the Middle East-North Africa (MENA). The starting point of Muslim history would be the prophet Muhammad's revelation in the 7th century, followed by the Islamic Golden Age (8th-14th centuries), when Muslims were ahead of the rest of the world in the arts, science, philosophy, and technology. This period is still remembered and cherished with pride by both Sunni and Shia Muslims, the two biggest denominations within Islam, which - despite common misconceptions in the West - is not a monolith but splits into different religious schools and branches. The modern era has been marked by the more or less direct colonial domination of European powers which left its legacy in many states belonging now to the Islamic world. Much of today's turmoil in the MENA region has its roots in the colonial times and the fault lines drawn by the European politicians. However, the blame cannot be wholly assigned to external powers: the list of factors contributing to the Middle East's present complex and often difficult situation is long and includes many internal issues.
The Jewish Community: Authority and Social Control in Poznan and Swarzedz 1650-1793
Anna Michałowska-Mycielska
This book features the mechanisms underlying the operation of Jewish communities and the policies pursued by community authorities in early modem times. The communities featured are Poznań and Swarzędz. Although authority was mainly exercised in a community by the kahal and its officials, the rabbi, brotherhoods, and craftsmen’s guilds were also involved in the community’s management. The purpose of this work is also to highlight the mutual interdependencies between all of these groups. It is by no means accidental that Wielkopolska (Great Poland) has been chosen as an example. This region, important in demographic and cultural terms, was the area of the earliest Jewish settlement in Polish lands. Jerzy Topolski described Wielkopolska’s unique socioeconomic structure. Agriculture and industry shaped the area’s economy (with the grange catering to the domestic market rather than to exports across the Baltic Sea, with nobility more inclined to invest, with highly developed sheep breeding and textile industry, woolen cloth production in particular, and with a high share of urban population, a positive trade balance, and a high share of pecuniary rent in peasants’ performances to their lords). Wielkopolska was mainly inhabited by medium nobility and there were no large magnate estates, typical of the eastern regions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Owing to Wielkopolska’s specificity, the nature of Jewish settlement in this region was distinctly different from that in other regions: Jews mainly settled in towns, taking up such typical urban occupations as trade and crafts. The book predominantly relies on the archival sources produced by two Jewish communities in Wielkopolska – in Poznań and Swarzędz – which are ample and very well preserved compared to those of other Commonwealth’s communities. It also features broader phenomena characteristic of the way the Jewish self-government functioned at the local level. It is also worth underscoring that the state of estates, where individual estates exercised separate rights and were differently organized, was a very good ground for the growth of such self-government. This second English edition of the book is largely due to the unflagging interest in the history and culture of the Polish Jews. That interest is not a mere fad, but a phenomenon that has become a permanent feature of historical writing. There is also a noticeable trend for scholars, who are increasingly better prepared in terms of research tools and language, to focus on that area of study. Which translates into a new perception of the place and role of the Jews without whom the socio-economic landscape of the ancient Commonwealth would have been highly incomplete and sparse. It is becoming more widespread in Poland, too, as evidenced by the emergence of various museums which feature/underscore the presence of Jews in local communities. As the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, recently opened in Warsaw, best demonstrates. The Poznań community is one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Polish lands. The oldest reference to Jews living in Poznań (Pozna) comes from 1379.[1] Legend has it that a synagogue was built in that town in 1367, first referred to in source materials in 1449. The first mention of the cemetery comes from 1438.Another Poznań legend, which most probably dates from the second half of the 15th century, tells about the host profaned by the Poznań Jews in 1399.
The Key Issues of Polish Penal Law
Krzysztof Indecki, Justyna Jurewicz
Humanism is also reflected in the Penal Code provisions concerning sentencing. These provisions require sentencing courts to take into account the personal traits and circumstances of the offender, his mode of living prior to committing the act and his behaviour after the offence. At the same time, the court is obliged to take into account the purpose of punishment, both with regards to its social impact and its preventive and re-educational aims in respect of the convict (art. 53 of the Penal Code). Based upon the principle of humanism the Code gives ground to the system of justice to less severe treatment of the offender who is responsible for an accidental offence, the negligence offence or when it is reasonable expecting that the offender, treated less severely, will not commit a new offence in the nearest future. The legal instruments for less severe treatment of an accidental offender include for example conditional discontinuance of proceedings concerning the offence – first of all – it should not be socially damaging (arts. 66–68). The book gives a view on the principles of Polish penal law. It consists of two parts which are divided due to the topics: general and special part of penal law. The authors present the commentary to the main institutions of Polish Penal Code. They show the most important provisions in the background of the doctrine and jurisprudence. The book is addressed both to the foreigners and the Poles who needs to improve their English in law.
Tadeusz Pankiewicz
Ci nieliczni mieszkańcy getta, którzy zdołali przeżyć okrutny czas wojny, zachowali do dziś we wdzięcznej pamięci aptekę Pod Orłem i jej właściciela.
The Language-Cognition Interface in Bilinguals: An evaluation of the Conceptual Transfer Hypothesis
Jolanta Latkowska
Książka skierowana jest do studentów i pracowników naukowych filologii obcych, których zainteresowania obejmują psycholingwistyczne zależności pomiędzy umysłowością a językiem w kontekście szeroko pojmowanej dwujęzyczności. Zawiera przegląd współczesnych teorii dotyczących budowy słownika umysłowego osób dwujęzycznych, relacji pomiędzy myślą a językiem oraz dyskusję najnowszych badań przeprowadzonych w ośrodkach krajowych i zagranicznych.
