W Bez dogmatu zobaczymy zupełnie innego Sienkiewicza niż ten, którego poznaliśmy dzięki jego powieściom historycznym, zapewniającym mu po dziś dzień sławę. Tym razem pisarz stworzył utwór o czasach mu współczesnych, podejmujący problem człowieka końca XIX wieku, pozbawionego trwałych zasad moralnych i celu w życiu, do którego mógłby dążyć. Ze względu na tematykę oraz brak jednoznacznego potępienia głównego bohatera utwór wzbudził burzliwą dyskusję i wywołał zarzuty amoralności. Dla wielu młodych ludzi Bez dogmatu była diagnozą ich pokolenia. Bohaterem powieści jest pochodzący z bogatej szlacheckiej rodziny Leon Płoszowski. Inteligentny, utalentowany i wszechstronnie wykształcony nie może jednak znaleźć miejsca w życiu, które upływa mu bezproduktywnie na rozrywkach, bywaniu w towarzystwie i podróżach po Europie. Za tą elegancką maską kryje się jednak hulaka i egoista pozbawiony zahamowań, który nie liczy się z uczuciami innych ludzi. Gdy Leon poznaje śliczną i skromną Anielkę, nie potrafi oprzeć się jej urokowi i zaczyna zabiegać o jej względy. Dziewczyna odwzajemnia uczucie, co daje Leonowi złudzenie, że już ją posiadł. Los postanawia jednak z niego zadrwić…
