With Louis Lambert, however, Balzac takes the idea of the philosophical novel a little too far in giving us this odd, chimerical mashup of philosophical treatise and coming-of-age novel. The novel seems to focus on the life and particularly the thoughts of the genius boy protagonist Louis Lambert. Set mostly in a school at Vendôme, it examines the life and theories of Louis fascinated by the Swedish philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg (16881772) and his book Heaven and Hell. However, the main core of the novel is not about the life of Lambert as it is on his thoughts and ideas, as well as about emotions in humans lives. A beautiful novel by the great French novelist Balzacs novel sequence La Comedie Humane, which fall into the Etude Philosophic section of the sequence!

Wszystkie jego utwory zostały umieszczone w Indeksie ksiąg zakazanych dekretami z końca XIX wieku.  „Lourdes” to ciekawe opowiadanie o księdzu katolickim Piotrze Fromentcie, który przeżywa poważny kryzys wiary, co skłania go do udania się na pielgrzymkę do Lourdes z chorą przyjaciółką z dzieciństwa Marią de Guersaint. Piotr obserwuje naiwną wiarę tłumu w cuda i brak głębszej refleksji nad wiarą u uczestników pielgrzymki oraz postawie Ojców z Groty, którzy nastawieni są jedynie na zyski przynoszone przez pielgrzymki. Przed wyjazdem z miasta Ksiądz Froment zauważa poprawę wielu chorych, jednak okazuje się, że jest to wytłumaczalne przez naukę. Piotr obserwując sytuację, dochodzi do wniosku, iż ratunkiem dla katolicyzmu jest powrót do korzeni religii.

Ta bardzo utalentowana autorka powieści opisywała życie angielskiej klasy wyższej z początku XIX wieku. Mimo, że sama wiodła stosunkowo odosobnione życie na prowincji w hrabstwie Hampshire, nie pozbawiło jej to zmysłu obserwacji i nie zubożyło dramaturgii jej utworów. Ich fabuła najczęściej dotyczy zamążpójścia i związanych z tym problemów społecznych (co ciekawe, sama Austen nigdy nie wyszła za mąż!). Reputację wyśmienitej pisarki zyskała już za życia – jej powieści chwalił m.in. Walter Scott. Do dziś ekranizuje się dzieła Austen, a jej powieści pozyskują rzesze wielbicielek.
