"When Rogues Fall Out incorporates some wonderful conundrums to hoodwink and hinder the cleverest of crime readers. This book contains three interconnected stories. In the first, a respectable collector of antiques falls victim to temptation. In the second a police inspector is found dead in suspicious circumstances in a railway tunnel. This section includes an interesting essay on the early use of fingerprint evidence. The third is a classic locked room mystery where someone has been making use of a sealed room in a remote country house. All three are resolved together in the last few pages. The rogues of the title include three very different men engaged in stealing and fencing high-quality jewelry. One is a working-class robber; one a refined antiques dealer turned fence; and one a mysterious middleman with the appearance of a gentleman.
Set in the late 1920s-early 1930s, When the Gangs Came to London is rated as one of Edgar Wallaces best work by fans of his genre of crime fiction. Two rival gangs from Chicago coming to London and competing to blackmail rich men into paying up to prevent being killed. When a lull ensues, Captain Jiggs Allermain of the Chicago Detective Bureau suspects the rival gangs of forming an uneasy alliance. Suddenly a shot rings through the House of Commons, unleashing an outburst of terror even more bloody. Wallace wrote this one towards the end of his life, he may even have been in Hollywood when he wrote it which could explain the very old school Hollywood gangsters!
This book was written in 1899, and is one of the last science-fiction books Wells wrote before his turn towards social realism in his writing. In this dystopian novel, Graham falls into a coma-like sleep, a sleep that he wakes from some 203 years in the future. But times have changed. Due to the wise investments of a board of trustees, Grahams money has compounded into the greatest fortune the world has ever seen, and the trustees have used it to virtually enslave the entire planet. But when he comes out of his trance he is horrified to discover that the money accumulated in his name is being used to maintain a hierarchal society in which most are poor, and more than a third of all people are enslaved. This struggle is the main focus of the larger part of the novel. The novel proposes that whatever is done officially for the good of society, individual ambition is unlikely to address the failure of capitalist structures to create a good standard of living for those whose work supports the system.
The final, and certainly climactic, adventure of Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Professor George Edward Challenger is 1928s When the World Screamed. It is another Professor Challenger story where a new craziness pressures him to make the earth feel the existence of human being on its surface. Professor says the earth is a giant creature and it doesnt even care or know that we the human being exist on its surface. Professor believes that by drilling into the center of the earth, he will be the first person to let the planet know that there are people on its surface. He begins a very expensive experiment and one day his dreams come true. The majority of the story, like others in the story, is about the build-up to the event. Its narrated by a new character, Peerless Jones, who is an expert on drilling.
When the World Shook is a classic story, written by H. Rider Haggard, telling about the horror of a ghost town. The plot revolves around three friends one absolutely unshakable skeptic, the other an absolutely believer, and the third and central character is a person who is looking for meaning in life. A hurricane shipwrecks them on an unknown island in the Pacific inhabited by a degenerating people who worship an ancient god called Oro. Three men experience all sorts of difficulties and find all kinds of miracles on the island.

Let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the entire world. Taken from Malala Yousafzais speech to the UN in 2013 When I meet with children on different occasions, I ask them which of their rights is the most important to them. Polish children say its the right to express their own opinion. The same right is also important to Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who not only uses it with courage but also boldly speaks out for another fundamental right: the right to education. In many countries the opportunity of attending school is treated as an unpleasant necessity. For Malala and her colleagues learning was a desired and only chance for a better future. Marek Michalak The Ombudsman for Children On the 29th October 2016, on the request of Polish and Pakistani children and by the resolution of the International Chapter, Malala was made a Knight of the Order of the Smile. The author of this book, Renata Piatkowska, is also a Knight of the Order of the Smile. Smiley, eager to play and to sing hits by Justin Bieber this is the Malala we meet. The only thing that distinguishes her from her friends is that she doesnt cover her face with a scarf. Is that a good reason to shoot a teenage girl in the face? It soon becomes clear that Malala is no ordinary teenager, but a blogger who by describing the state of education for girls in Pakistan exposed herself to the Taliban. A touching story about the strength that lies dormant in each one of us and how we should fight to help those who are weaker than us. Malala has proven that just one brave person is enough to inspire multitudes.

Settle in for a whimsical, thoroughly enjoyable whirlwind tour through the prodigious imagination of American short-story master O. Henry. When he wrote the following, he may have discounted his own creativity. Whirligigs, comprised of 24 short stories and published in 1910, is evidence of this. O. Henry writes of love and loss, of mystery and drama, of journalism and murders and trials. He creates a tapestry of characters, young and old, wealthy and poor. It offers some of his best short stories; complete with quirky characters, witty romps with clever twists and surprise endings. If you love classic O. Henry stories like The Gift of the Magi and have been curious about the rest of this beloved authors body of work, Whirligigs is a great place to start.
Doctor Kildare approached just in time to hear Meg say to the officer, "I heard a shot outside my apartment, then a crash. When I ran out, this man was lying on the landing... "Whiskey Sour" (1938) is a Doctor Kildare story that continues the depiction of a "gangster" atmosphere surrounding the young doctor as he cared for East Side streets toughs and local political bosses while defying his hospital superiors. Max Brand (1892-1944) is the best-known pen name of widely acclaimed author Frederick Faust, creator of Destry, Dr. Kildare, and other beloved fictional characters. His action-filled stories of adventure and heroism and even poetry continue to entertain readers throughout the world.

Whispering Death (1931) is the third adventure in the Dr. Night trilogy by Aidan De Brune, (1874-1946). This third story is gaudy crime yarns, which steadily veers into fantasy by the end and features a very unlikely Asian villain who is as different from Fu Manchu as you can imagine: a small, colorless man of uncertain central Asian origin whose principal obsession is raising money by any means possible to recreate a long-dead central Asian kingdom of which his distant ancestors were kings. Most of the stories in the Dr. Night trilogy take place in and around Sydney, although the earliest known is set in Perth Western Australia and one of the novelettes in north Queenslan. Aidan de Brune was a big name in Australian literature but is forgotten today. He was a prolific author who wrote in a variety of genres.

A man ends up stabbed to death on a street in Londons Tidal Basin, victim of the almost mythical murderer roaming the streets of London, the Devil of Tidal Basin. But why is another bandit suddenly sighted in Tidal Basin as well? What connection had the Devil with White Face? Superintendent Mason, one of the Yards Big Five wanted to know, and what Superintendent Mason wanted to know he generally found out. Criminals knew him as Sympathetic Mason, because of his curious methods of cross-examination. This is Edgar Wallace at his best and Edgar Wallace is known the world over as the king of mystery writers. White Face involves more mystery than a number of his novels and recommended for people who like to treat a mystery story as a solvable riddle.
The main conflict of the story is dog-nature vs. wolf-nature, or nature vs. man. What happens to White fang, and how he goes through the many troubles that he has to. Growing up in the Yukon territory of Canada during the Klondike Gold Rush, he learned the law of the Wild at an early age: kill, or be killed, eat, or be eaten. Separated from his mother and traded from master to master, White Fang never grasped the concept of love, and violence was all that he knew. Having no teacher, he learned the rules of survival by experience. Then, a cruel man buys White Fang and turns him into a pit dog forced to fight for money. He save one day, a mixed dogwolf from the hands of a cruel man, and a brave friendship develops between the two. With beautifully realistic details of the harsh realities of life in the Yukon, White Fang is a grippingly original tale about morality and redemption that still stands as an American classic.
“White Fang” is a book by Jack London, an American novelist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction. White Fang is the name of the book's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. The story details White Fang's journey to domestication in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild.
White Nights - a short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a Russian novelist, philosopher and short story writer. Many literary critics rate him as one of the greatest psychological novelists in world literature. Like many of Dostoyevsky's stories, "White Nights" is told in the first person by a nameless narrator. The narrator is a young man living in Saint Petersburg who suffers from loneliness. He gets to know and falls in love with a young woman, but the love remains unrequited.
