This monograph analyses the way that Jews were portrayed in various scholarly journals and lay gazettes published in French in the United Provinces of the Netherlands, mostly by Huguenot refugees. Many of these sources have previously escaped scholarly attention, and as such are valuable sources for exploration. The scholarly journals are mostly focused on the discussion of historical and theological aspects of Jewish people and Judaism, the origins of their language and its influence on others, and their customs and nuances related to worship. The lay gazettes discuss gossip and contemporary events, portraying the Jews as their editors see them. Jews were depicted in these sources in several unique ways which are identified in this study. Particular attention is given to the dimension of privacy, which provides an additional tool of analysis aimed at better understanding how these constructs were created. The final part of this book examines how Muslims in general and Turks in particular, as well as the Siamese, were portrayed in the same sources, in order to investigate whether they were treated differently than the Jews.

Jego rodzina ze strony ojca (emerytowanego kapitana armii austro-węgierskiej) była pochodzenia serbskiego, ale sam uważał się za Niemca i obywatela austriackiego. Studiował germanistykę i anglistykę w Pradze, Berlinie i Hadze; studia ukończył w 1894. Od 1895 roku pracował w bibliotece naukowej Uniwersytetu w Grazu, w 1897 roku na własną prośbę przeniesiony do biblioteki uniwersyteckiej w Pradze, gdzie był sekretarzem, a od 1903 r. kierownikiem biblioteki. W 1907 obronił swoją pracę habilitacyjną na temat nowożytnego języka oraz literatury niem. i został docentem na Uniwersytecie Niemieckim w Pradze. W 1914 r. objął katedrę germanistyki na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim w Krakowie; w związku z tą nominacją w ciągu trzech lat nauczył się języka polskiego. Tymczasem jednak wybuchła pierwsza wojna światowa i nowo mianowany profesor od sierpnia 1914 do września 1915, a następnie po urlopie (wykorzystanym na pracę uniwersytecką) od lipca 1916 do sierpnia 1917 roku pełnił służbę oficerską na terenie Bośni i Hercegowiny, przy granicy serbskiej. Po wojnie wrócił do obowiązków profesorskich i od listopada 1917 r. do 1932 roku kierował katedrą germanistyki na UJ. Wykształcił ponad 100 magistrów i 30 doktorów (prac doktorskich pisanych pod jego kierunkiem było blisko 50). Z czasem jego zainteresowania przesuwały się od niem. literatury współczesnej ku okresowi romantyzmu i oświecenia (dysertacja o Goethem), a także ku średniowieczu. Miał niewielu przyjaciół wśród kolegów profesorów, za to utrzymywał serdeczne stosunki ze swoimi studentami, urządzając z ich udziałem koncerty domowe (jego żona była wybitną skrzypaczką) czy odwiedzając sławną kawiarnię artystyczną w Krakowie, ,,Jamę Michalikową". W 1932 roku, choć nie osiągnął jeszcze właściwego wieku, Wukadinović został zmuszony do przejścia na emeryturę. Zmarł w 1938 r. na anginę, kilka miesięcy po śmierci swojej ukochanej żony, Anny.
