Podczas gdy policja rozpoczyna poszukiwania seryjnego mordercy na terenie Europy, duński śledczy Felix Jrgensen podąża duńskim tropem, poszukując mężczyzny z charakterystyczną wadą wzroku. Felix i jego nowa asystentka Kathrine decydują się na zastawienie pułapki na tego operującego w wielu krajach przestępcę. Ich pomysł wiąże się z zagrożeniem dla Kathrine, gdyż mają do czynienia z doświadczonym mordercą, który potrafi wtopić się w otoczenie i stamtąd wyłowić swoje ofiary.

Kathrine zostaje uprowadzona ze swojego mieszkania przez seryjnego mordercę, a policja szybko zatrzymuje podejrzanego. Wkrótce okazuje się, że trop jest błędny. Śledczy Felix Jrgensen jest przekonany, że trafił na właściwy ślad, gdy okazuje się, że jeden z ginekologów otrzymał zakaz wykonywania zawodu z powodu narażania życia pacjentek. Trop prowadzi do opuszczonego domu na wyspie Lolland. Czy Kathrine właśnie tam przebywa i czy morderca zorientował się, że policja zastawiła na niego pułapkę? Czy Felixowi uda się uratować policjantkę i wyciągnąć ją ze szponów sadystycznego oprawcy, zanim będzie za późno? Black notice jest powieścią kryminalną składającą się z pięciu rozdziałów. Historia została częściowo oparta na prawdziwych wydarzeniach.

Kiedy w 1979 roku Black Sabbath opuszczał Ozzy Osbourne, wielu nie wierzyło w szczęśliwy ciąg dalszy tej historii. Zespół zaczął borykać się z niezliczoną ilością problemów personalnych. Pulp adventure, seemingly a bit crude and dashed off quickly, but good storytelling none the less. Pirates and lost cities a bit of Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones rolled into one, but also with echoes of one of Howards best known tales of piracy, the Conan story Queen of the Black Coast a superior story. The writing here is okay, entertaining enough, and even manages a little character exposition, but Howard could do and did do better work.

In Black Wind Blowing, Howard lays it on so thick I half suspected he was trying to do a spoof on the genre. But then, his normal storytelling was always full of bizarre images, hyperactive violence and heavy use of adjectives so this story is probably just an extreme example. It helps too, that Black Wind Blowing has enough wild premises to build at least two or three effective horror stories on. If youre not moved by whats going on at the moment, by the next page the story has shifted gears in a weirder direction.
