Johnny Cash

Był Amerykaninem do szpiku kości, ale swoich korzeni szukał po drugiej stronie Atlantyku. Twierdził, że jego ród wywodzi się od szkockich królów Malcolma IV i Duffa, a pierwszym amerykańskim Cashem był William, żeglarz, który przewoził osadników zmierzających do Nowego Świata. Pradziadek Johnny''ego walczył zaś po stronie konfederatów w wojnie secesyjnej. On sam dorastał na farmie. Jego rodzice zajmowali się uprawą bawełny. Johnny, zanim został gwiazdą, pracował w fabryce samochodów, prowadził nasłuch radiowy dla Sił Powietrznych Stanów Zjednoczonych w Niemczech, był akwizytorem firmy dystrybuującej sprzęt domowy. Jednak jego przeznaczeniem była muzyka. Miał ogromne szczęście - jego pierwsze płyty wydała wytwórnia, dla której nagrywali Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison i Charlie Rich. Ale wraz z rozwojem kariery zaczęły się też jego problemy z narkotykami. Mimo to udało mu się osiągnąć sukces, także komercyjny - Ring of Fire to prawdziwy evergreen. Uzależnienia nie przetrwał jednak pierwszy związek. Następne lata to przeprowadzka do Nashville, drugie małżeństwo, kolejne sukcesy zawodowe i ciągła walka z nałogami. Od upadku ratowała go żona, praca i wiara, którą otwarcie manifestował. Kris Kristofferson napisał o Cashu: "To chodząca kontradykcja, pół w nim prawdy, reszta - fikcja". Na pewno jest legendą, a "Autobiografia" to jej frapujące uzupełnienie.
