Set in the Yukon, it tells the story of Frona Welse, "a Stanford graduate and physical Valkyrie" who takes to the trail after upsetting her wealthy father's community by her forthright manner and befriending the town's prostitute. She is also torn between love for two suitors: Gregory St Vincent, a local man who turns out to be cowardly and treacherous; and Vance Corliss, a Yale-trained mining engineer.

Przez pierwsze dni podróży Christopher (Kit) odkrywa swoją słabość fizyczną oraz kompletny brak przygotowania do twardego życia pioniera i poszukiwacza złota. Wyśmiewany przez wytrawnych podróżników i niejednokrotnie poniżany przez nich postanawia jednak kontynuować swoją przygodę i dorównać starym wygom ("Wyga" - pierwotny, roboczy tytuł pierwszego wydania powieści). Dociera w końcu do Dawson na Alasce, gdzie postanawia zostać na dłużej. Już w czasie podróży, dzięki zbiegowi okoliczności uzyskuje przydomek "Zawierucha" (Kurzawa), który przywiera do niego tak mocno, że niektórzy zapominają jak ma naprawdę na imię. The story of the main character was partially based upon the life of Oakland entrepreneur "Borax" Smith.
