A framing story is told in the first person by Darrell Standing, a university professor serving life imprisonment in San Quentin State Prison for murder. Prison officials try to break his spirit by means of a torture device called "the jacket," a canvas jacket which can be tightly laced so as to compress the whole body, inducing angina. Standing discovers how to withstand the torture by entering a kind of trance state, in which he walks among the stars and experiences portions of past lives.

Wierzę w nieprawdopodobieństwa, które stają się prawdą. Wcale się nie dziwię, gdy to, co wydawało się niemożliwym, ziściło się, jako możliwość jasna, jak słońce. W ogóle nie dziwię się, a raczej dziwię się bardzo rzadko, ale wtedy zdziwienie moje graniczy z przerażeniem. Czuję wtedy, że ogarnia mnie całego od cebulek włosów do paznokci u nóg zdziwienie twarde, stężone, zapychające mi gardło tak, że mi oddychać i mówić trudno. Dziwię się raz na pięć, sześć lat, a przy tym to ciekawe po pięć, sześć razy w dniu, w którym skłonny jestem do dziwienia się. Jest to jakiś chorobliwy atak dziwienia się z lada błahego powodu. Chciałbym jeszcze zaznać, kiedy w życiu uczucia strachu i bólu głowy, szczególniej tego ostatniego, o którym wspominają mi często moi znajomi, a nawet własna żona. Pragnienie owo ziściło się, ale w jaki sposób i w jakich okolicznościach kto ciekaw dowie się po przeczytaniu tej książki.
