Crazy scientist Gordon Wright calls Longville in Baden-Baden to judge whether he should marry Angela. After a couple of years, Longville meets Angela again at a French beach resort and realizes that he loves her.

A short story which deals, as many other novels by James, with the changing role of women in Society and the differences that begun to arise between the old stiff Europe and the America at the end of the XIXth century. It portrays the confused courtship of the eponymous American girl by Winterbourne, a compatriot of hers with much more sophistication. His pursuit of her is hampered by her own flirtatiousness, which is frowned upon by the other expatriates they meet in Switzerland and Italy. Her lack of understanding of the social mores of the society she so desperately wishes to enter ultimately leads to tragedy. This little story catalyzed a lot of late 19th century debate about American values and European values and- particularly the confident, un-blushing American girl who is not inclined to conform to the snobbish tastes and attitudes of the upper class people she meets as her family becomes wealthy.

The Ambassadors

The novel comes from what is called Jamess late period. The writing is mannered, baroque, complex, and focused intently on the psychological relationships between his characters. There is very little plot here in the conventional sense. Much of the interest in the narrative is centred on the limitations of the principal character, from whose point of view the story is told. Lambert Strether is a morally upright, middle-aged American who feels that life has passed him by. He wants to do the right thing, but finds himself somewhat out of his depth when he visits Paris which Walter Benjamin called the capital of the nineteenth century. In general, The Ambassadors describes a visit to Europe in the early 20th century by Americans to find and retrieve a wayward family member, and the complex cross-cultural interactions between the Americans and the Europeans.
