Opisuje eksperyment jednego z doktorów Ox i inspirowany jest prawdziwym lub domniemanym wpływem tlenu na żywe istoty. Akcja powieści toczy się w wyimaginowanej wiosce Quiquendone we Flandrii Zachodniej, której obywatele określani są jako ludzie zamożni, rozsądni, rozważni, towarzyscy, z przeciętnym temperamentem, gościnni, życzliwi i gdzie nawet psy nie gryzą, a koty nie drapią. Pewien naukowiec dr Ox przychodzi do władz i proponuje zbudowanie nowatorskiego systemu oświetlenia gazowego bez żadnych kosztów dla miasta. Oferta zostaje przyjęta z radością. Dr Ox i jego asystent Gédéon Ygne (których nazwiska tworzą słowo oxygne - tlen) proponują zastosowanie elektrolizy do rozdzielenia wody na wodór i tlen oraz pompowanie tych dwóch gazów oddzielnymi rurami do miasta. Sekretnym planem lekarza jest jednak przeprowadzenie na dużą skalę eksperymentu dotyczącego wpływu tlenu na rośliny, zwierzęta i ludzi, dlatego przepompowuje nadmiar niewidzialnego i bezwonnego gazu przez wszystkie lampy. Wzbogacone powietrze ma niezwykły wpływ na miasto. Przyspiesza wzrost roślin, wywołuje podniecenie i agresywność u zwierząt i ludzi. Ostatecznie podekscytowani mieszkańcy Quiquendone decydują się wyruszyć na wojnę z sąsiednią wioską Virgamen, aby pomścić dawne przestępstwo: w 1195 r. krowa należąca do tego miasta odważyła się wejść na quiquendońskie pole i zjeść kilka kęsów ich trawy. Jednak, gdy armia była w drodze do bitwy, wypadek w fabryce doktora Oxa powoduje wymieszanie tlenu i wodoru, powodując ogromną eksplozję, która niszczy fabrykę.
