Szatan zaś nosi charakterystyczne nazwisko Traum - co potwierdza, iż jego domeną są sny i marzenia. Wielowymiarowa postać młodego Szatana w tej powieści może też być rozpatrywana w psychologicznym planie jako wcielenie ukrytych pragnień tych chłopców. Wprowadza on ich w inną rzeczywistość, odsłania przed nimi przyszłość, przenosi z miejsca na miejsce, w jego obecności wszystko nabiera intensywności istnienia. Spotkanie z Szatanem staje się dla chłopców inicjacją we własną psychikę, ujawnieniem potencjalnych mocy, nigdy nie przeczuwanych, zepchniętych na samo dno podświadomości. Nadto fantastyka Twaina, podobnie jak w "Fauście" Goethego, gdzie Mefistofeles występuje jako alter ego bohatera, ma charakter metafizyczny.
