Friedrich Gerstäcker wurde am 10.05.1816 in Hamburg geboren. 1837 wanderte er nach Amerika aus, wo er ein abwechslungsreiches und abenteuerliches Leben als Matrose, Heizer, Jager, Farmer, Koch, Silberschmied, Holzfaller, Fabrikant und Hotelier fuhrte. 1843 kehrte Gerstacker nach Deutschland zuruck. In Deutschland nahm Gerstäcker regen Anteil am politischen Geschehen der 48er Jahre, er verlor seine geliebte Ehefrau und war Kriegsberichterstatter im Deutsch-Französichen Krieg. Er lebte ab 1868 in Dresden und Braunschweig. Gerstcker starb am 31.05.1872 in Braunschweig. Gerstcker war ein Erzhler von auerordentlich spannenden und farbenprchtigen Abenteuerromanen, die jedoch stets belehrende Momente in der Landschafts- und Kulturschilderung beinhalten.
