Od tego momentu przydarzają mu się niezwykłe przygody, jest świadkiem katastrofy morskiej, buntu czy kanibalizmu. Opowieść rozpoczyna się całkiem konwencjonalną wyprawą morską, lecz staje się znacznie bardziej osobliwa i trudna do sklasyfikowania w ostatnich rozdziałach, łącznie z religijnym symbolizmem i zagadnieniem teorii pustej Ziemi. Powieść kończy się nagle, wraz z pojawieniem się dziwnej, spowitej mgłą sylwetki, mającej zabarwioną skórę niczym perfekcyjna biel śniegu. The work relates the tale of the young Arthur Gordon Pym, who stows away aboard a whaling ship called the Grampus. Various adventures and misadventures befall Pym, including shipwreck, mutiny, and cannibalism, before he is saved by the crew of the Jane Guy. Aboard this vessel, Pym and a sailor named Dirk Peters continue their adventures farther south. Docking on land, they encounter hostile black-skinned natives before escaping back to the ocean. The novel ends abruptly as Pym and Peters continue toward the South Pole. The story starts out as a fairly conventional adventure at sea, but it becomes increasingly strange and hard to classify. Poe, who intended to present a realistic story, was inspired by several real-life accounts of sea voyages, and drew heavily from Jeremiah N. Reynolds and referenced the Hollow Earth theory. He also drew from his own experiences at sea. Analyses of the novel often focus on the potential autobiographical elements as well as its portrayal of race and the symbolism in the final lines of the work.

Historia dzieje się w 1891, gdzie to pojawia się największy wróg Holmesa, przestępczy geniusz, nazywany przez Holmesa Napoleonem zbrodni, profesor Moriarty. Holmes przybywa pewnego wieczora do domu doktora Watsona w stanie wyraźnego poruszenia, mając otarte i krwawiące kostki u rąk. Tego dnia ledwo uniknął trzech zamachów na swoje życie po wizycie profesora Moriartyego, który to ostrzegł detektywa, by ten zrezygnował z prób dopadnięcia go i postawienia przed obliczem sprawiedliwości. Pierwszy raz, gdy Holmes wychodził zza zakrętu ulicy, prawie przejechała go dorożka i w porę zdążył odskoczyć. Za drugim razem, kiedy szedł ulicą, z dachu spadła cegła, ledwo mijając detektywa. Zawołał wtedy policję, by sprawdziła cały teren, lecz nie mógł udowodnić, że było to coś więcej, niż tylko przypadek. Za ostatnim razem, gdy szedł do domu Watsona, został zaatakowany przez zbirów uzbrojonych w pałki. Holmes zdołał pokonać przeciwników i dostarczył ich w ręce policji, ale przyznał, że właściwie nie było szansy na udowodnienie, iż byli to podwładni profesora. Holmes śledzi Moriartyego i jego agentów od miesięcy i prawie ma szansę na złapanie ich wszystkich w sidła i posadzenie na ławie oskarżonych. Moriarty to geniusz kryjący się za bardzo dobrze zorganizowaną i ściśle tajną siłą przestępczą i pokonanie go Holmes uzna za ukoronowanie swojej kariery. Moriarty jest zdolny pokrzyżować mu plany, gdyż, jak Holmes przyznaje, jest mu równy intelektualnie... (za Wikipedią).
