The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment. This vision of Mars was based on the work of the astronomer Percival Lowell, whose ideas were widely popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

London depicts the striking panorama of the South seas with adventurers, scoundrels, swindlers, pirates, and cannibals.

Sie helfen dabei, den heiligen Schatz der Glieder zurückzuerobern, was wiederum zur Folge hat, dass sie bald darauf von Beduinen angegriffen werden und Kara gefangengenommen wird. Ein wirklich lesenswertes Buch, auch abgesehen von seinem Abenteuercharakter.

Karl May war einer der produktivsten Autoren von Abenteuerromanen. Er zählt seit mehr als 100 Jahren zu den meistgelesenen Schriftstellern der Welt und der deutschen Sprache. Am Rio de la Plata beginnt für den Erzähler das Südamerika-Abenteuer. In einem von Revolutionen zerrissenen Land bringt ihm seine Ähnlichkeit mit einem dortigen Parteigänger prompt erste Verwicklungen. Ein Geheimnis zieht ihn ins Landesinnere von Argentinien, wo er dem Revolutionär Lopez Jordan begegnet. Die vorliegende Erzählung spielt Anfang der 70er-Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts.
