In Woodside Manor, there was an old servant a terrible man, almost ninety years old, with thick white eyebrows and sharp black eyes who recalled the tragedy Silas Brooks, the valet of the unfortunate Arundel Secretan. But even he never spoke about it, but only listened when the story was mentioned with suspicion and hatred, flashing in his evil dark eyes. The servants said he was crazy that the recollection had turned his brain. One day, many years ago, he told this story, and never heard of mentioning it again. Arundel Secretan had too much of a swashbuckler in his blood...
This is a delightful Thorndyke mystery full of suspicious happenings, like the ugly human head found in a box checked at a railway station cloakroom. Other peculiar things are afoot too. A rich American gentleman has come to London to make a claim for an earldom, based on some far-fetched evidence. His lawyers seem particularly unsavory. And theres been a daring robbery of precious platinum, with a British vessel somehow implicated. The plot evolves around all these suspicious goings-on. It takes the clever Dr. Thorndyke to discover how they interrelate. The good doctor must solve these seemingly unrelated cases using his usual bag of forensic tricks and a few new ones for good measure. The crooks involved are unusually clever, but as usual, justice is served when... Dr. Thorndyke Intervenes!
The battle in the meadowlands of the Euphrates was over, but not the slaughter. On that bloody field where the Caliph of Bagdad and his Turkish allies had broken the onrushing power of Doubeys ibn Sadaka of Hilla and the desert, the steel-clad bodies lay strewn like the drift of a storm. The great canal men called the Nile, which connected the Euphrates with the distant Tigris, was choked with the bodies of the tribesmen, and survivors were panting in flight toward the white walls of Hilla which shimmered in the distance above the placid waters of the nearer river.

The Amazing Partnership is one of E. Phillips Oppenheims most intriguing stories. This story deals with a young man and a young woman who make an informal partnership in criminal investigation.

Ann Veronica. A Modern Love Story
First published in 1909, it focuses on feminist issues from the point of view of a young woman entering adulthood and enduring prejudice about her place in the world. And this novel, Ann Veronica, tells the story of a middle class young woman who is fed up of being expected to be purely decorative. Her father and her boyfriends really are incapable of understanding why she should want to study science, or control her own life in any way. One Wednesday, Ann Veronica Stanley came down from London in a state of solemn excitement and quite resolved to have things out with her father that very evening. She has to fend off unwelcome advances from men who want to enslave her, and evade a different sort of imprisonment from an over-protective family. Ann Veronica herself strikes out, makes men friends, joins militant suffragette action... The motive in the case of murder this is the first thing that draws the attention of the police. No one except a madman commits murder for no reason. Passion, hatred, money as soon as the motive is established, it, as a rule, unmistakably points to someone. That is why Pender took the club with Sinclairs arm and walked with him part of the way to his house on Brook Street. A very normal phenomenon on the part of one of Sinclairs best friends. He was damn smart about that. No one knew, no one even had a ghost of suspicion of the deadly hatred he was experiencing. Everyone thought they were friends: even Sinclair himself thought so. Tomorrow it will be a little shock for him when he realizes the truth.
