South Africa, 1900. After his father dies, nineteen-year-old David Crawfurd is sent off to South Africa to earn his living as a storekeeper in the back of beyond. A strange encounter on the journey suggests that dark deeds and treacherous intrigues are afoot all bound up with the mysterious primeval kingdom of Prester John. We participate in many thrilling adventure chases in the wild country, deal with nasty villains, narrow escapes, impossible climbs up rock walks, a secret cave of massive proportions with a hidden switch to open a boulder door, stores of diamonds to fund the uprising, a valuable and ancient ruby necklace and the courageous love of a gigantic dog.
Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Elizabeth Gaskell, Adelaide Ann Procter
A House to Let is a novella originally published in 1858 by Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Elizabeth Gaskell and Adelaide Anne Procter. Each of the contributors wrote a chapter (stories within a story, and in the case of Adelaide Anne Procter, as a story in verse) and the whole was edited by Dickens, making it fit together seamlessly as a whole. This novella is a composite tale of mystery and intrigue set amid the dark streets of Victorian London. It is about a house that has remained vacant for several years which as come to the notice of an elderly woman named Sophonisba. She wants to know why the house is vacant, which is what the various chapters set out to explain, through the histories of various tenants. A House of Let is a seriously underrated novella that captures the mystery and humor of a fabulous story of bygone days.
Ethel Lina White tried to confuse us again. In the story She Faded into Air a lot of thinking is needed, there is some logical chain. The main character, Evelyn Cross, disappears in a tannic manner when she enters a London apartment. Detectives get down to business, but not so simple.
Victor Whitechurch, a clergyman who became a mysterious writer, well known for his detective story Railroad Stories, was admired by Ellery Queen and Dorothy L. Sayers for impeccable conspiracy and factual accuracy: he was one of the first authors to submit his manuscripts to Scotland Yard to check for a police procedure. Downlands echoes analyze the life of a small village and the interaction of all the characters who live in it in everyday situations, from the funeral to the visit of the bishop.
The Thing That Walked in the Rain
Those readers who had been charmed by Otis Adelbert Klines swashbuckling sci-fi adventures would not have long to wait before they were treated to that novels follow-up thrill ride. The Thing That Walked in the Rain provides another interplanetary adventure. Considered by many to be the only true equal of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Otis Adelbert Kline was a master of the sword and planet genre. From his position on the original editorial staff of Weird Tales and as the literary agent for Conan creator Robert E. Howard, Kline helped shape the face of science fiction as we know it. Kline represented Howard from the Spring of 1933 until Howards death in June 1936, and continued to act as literary agent for Howards estate thereafter. This one is doing all of those things you expect and want a classic pulp sci-fi to do, not the least of which being to put a smile on your face.
A Difficult Problem and Other Stories
Originally published between 1894 and 1900, A Difficult Problem is a collection of ten short works of mysterious fiction by Anna Katharine Green. This whodunit collection brings to you some of Greens finest crime mysteries to keep you at your toes: The gray madam, The bronze hand, Midnight in Beauchamp Row, The staircase at the Hearts Delight and others. Michael Grogner, the chief of police and son of the Prime Minister, Nicholas Grogner, has followed the Princess to America to prevent her from seeking funds to overthrow her cousin, the King.
Captain Nicolas is the authors most recognizable character. One for which its immediately clear whose story it is. Hugh Walpole tells the story of a family conflict. Powieść historyczna Antoniny Domańskiej rozgrywająca się w końcu XIV wieku za panowania Kazimierza Wielkiego. Powieść ukazuje mądrą politykę zagraniczną i sprawiedliwe rządy wewnętrzne ostatniego z Piastów, któremu wdzięczna pamięć ludu nadała miano króla chłopów.
Haggards story about greed and selfishness. This is the story of the dastardly Mr. Meeson, the rich owner of the publishing house. The only brave human who wants to stop his atrocities is Augusta. However, he leaves a mark on her spine before death, which leads further to battle.
