Rowdy Vaughn is a goodhearted but somewhat uncouth range rider whose attempts at wooing the local schoolteacher are hampered by a longstanding blood feud. The problems start when Jessies brother turns out to be a good-for-nothing kind of guy who had done some nasty things to Rowdy in the past. The subplot, concerning Rowdys employers attempts to find pasture for his cattle during a drought, provides one of the highlights of the book: several interesting chapters describing a tedious cattle drive with a lack of water. Its a little slice of life in the untamed West that is sure to please Western fans.

The spinster-detective in the novel is Miss Van Arsdale, a member of the high society in New York and a woman who is short and plain in appearance. Against all odds, Rita Van Ardsdale has landed the man of her dreams and is blissfully in love. But her shot at happily ever after seems to be fading when her fiancé is accused of murder. It falls to Rita to crack the case and clear her beloveds name. Is she up to the task? It is one of the real masterpieces by Anna Katharine Green and a true gem of the genre of detective fiction, a well-written and refreshing story full of action, but without any violence being involved (apart from the murder it revolves around, of course).

The Mixer is a particularly cool and resourceful scoundrel who works on the philanthropic principle of robbing only the thief and outswindling the swindler. He shows unfailing ingenuity in relieving of their ill-gotten gains the successful promoters of burglaries, sweepstakes, and financial scoops. Each chapter describes, in Mr. Wallaces best manner, some fresh exploit more daring and original than the last, and so likeable does this engaging villain become that we are positively relieved when, realizing that he has gone far enough, he finally retires from business and escapes abroad.

Be sure to pay attention to the fact that Kipling understands the meaning of the introduction, taking into account where the story ends.
