This is another collection of interlinked short stories about the good life in Monte Carlo and Beausoleil after the first World War. Ten stories about Peter Hames, the former Inspector on the New York police department that got tossed off the force when he tried to stop an innocent man being railroaded by a corrupt police force. Disillusioned, but after inheriting a million dollars, he moves to France to become a painter. But the detective instincts never left and he gets involved in various adventures. Oppenheim follows three characters through adventures wherein they solve crimes, thwart criminals, and are duped by professionals.
This novel is served with a psychological detective dressing. In reality, this is a mixture of experiences, feelings and thoughts of the protagonist, describing events that in any case should end in tragedy. This is not hidden from the very beginning. Everything that happens is written very atmospheric, gradually thickening events to an inevitable outcome.
Beatrice is one of the most emotional works written by Henry Rider Haggard. There are no crazy adventures, frightening battles or supernatural events, but there is everything for the soul, for easy reading. It tells of the ill-fated love between Beatrice Granger, an unmarried Welsh teacher, and Jeffrey Bingham, a wretchedly married lawyer who lives in London. It all starts after Beatrice saved Jeffreys life in a canoe accident during a huge storm. This is a story about a tangled love triangle, and possibly a pentagon.
The Dark Eyes Of London is a crime novel by the British writer Edgar Wallace which was first published in 1924. Inspector Holt and his valet Sunny are planning a visit to Monte Carlo when an urgent telegram arrives from the Chief Commissioner of Scotland Yard. Mr. Gordon Stuart has been found drowned in suspicious circumstances. An unbalanced doctor and his brother murder a series of wealthy men to benefit from their life insurance policies, using a charity for the blind as a front for their activities. Holt returns on the same boat as Flash Fred Grogan, continental crook and gambler. Attempting to solve the mystery leads Holt into a string of exciting adventures and romance. It was based on an earlier short story The Croakers which Wallace had written.
A romance originally published in 1922 that holds up very well into the 21st century. Charles Rex is a sequel of The Hundredth Chance written by Ethel May Dell (1881-1939) who was a British writer of popular romance novels. Her stories are often full of passion and love and are set in India and other British colonial possessions. Not being a family man, Charles Rex travels widely and to some point aimlessly. On his last night in Italy, he rescues a small boy from a beating by his employer. What leads thereafter is an entanglement of duty, loyalty, love and honor bound marriages. This is a really fast moving, enjoyable romance with an interesting look at English society after the devastation of World War One.
John Sands needed a bride more than that, however, he needed somebody with a criminal mind. Luckily a female convict has escaped from prison that very morning and was sitting in his house. Romance and mystery, with classic twists and turns. As is typical with Wallace, this book includes a death, a love-affair, a kidnapping, an intrepid amateur. British author Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was reportedly the second biggest seller after the Bible in his heyday. He was a Reuters war correspondent during the Second Boer War and wrote thrillers to earn money. He later moved to Hollywood as a script writer and died while drafting King Kong.
One of the men is Captain Hugh Bulldog Drummond an officer with a strong desire for adventures. His friend, Peter, who tells this exciting story about a man who fears his life and desperately needs the help of a friend to penetrate the sinister Temple Tower. The author, as always makes an interesting story. The plot is full of dynamics actions.
The fifth volume in the chronicles of Craig Kennedy, scientific detective, takes up the familiar and successful formula for a new round of adventures. Craig Kennedy continues to amaze with his usual sorts of crimes jewel theft, missing persons, wrongly accused suspects, fixed horse races, arson, murder, and blackmail but he uses scientific procedures to analyze the evidence, sometimes involving fantastical devices. The Social Gangster is the story focused on a mysterious robbery, which gives a glimpse of a greater threat hanging over social life of big city youngsters. But no one seems to be concerned enough with it, until it is too late. It is up to Kennedy and his science to resolve the case and reduce the impact falling on the society.

Ułatwiał zapamiętywanie znaków i symboli narodowych.
Fiodor Michajłowicz Dostojewski

Collected Short Stories (Vol. 8). Collected Short Stories. Volume 8
The eighth issue features the usual assortment of stories and non-fiction. These are the next to last of the series of short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about Sherlock Holmes. Some are set before the Great War, the last takes place in 1914. Holmes is retired and refused to take on any more cases, preferring to live out his years in a small rural village. His Last Bow is a collection of seven Sherlock Holmes stories (eight in some editions) by Arthur Conan Doyle, plus the one-off title story, also called A Reminiscence of Sherlock Holmes under Reminiscences of Mr. Sherlock Holmes. The Adventure of Wistaria Lodge was originally in two parts: The Singular Experience of Mr. John Scott Eccles and The Tiger of San Pedro.
