Pleśń. Ryngraf. Farsa panny Heni
Tom zawiera trzy krótkie powieści: Pleśń, Ryngraf i Farsa panny Heni.
Wkrótce idzie do legionów.
The novel is complicated, its true. Long, ornate sentences, philosophical speculations of the characters, complex in their structure and further awareness of the phrase.. but.. this and not only the novel represents the uniqueness and sophistication. Restrained and at the same time shocking, harmonious and scary real. Did you know that among the higher aristocracy there are wolves in sheeps clothing?
When Mr. Dashwood dies, he must leave the bulk of his estate to the son by his first marriage, which leaves his second wife and their three daughters (Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret) in straitened circumstances. They are taken in by a kindly cousin, but their lack of fortune affects the marriageability of both practical Elinor and romantic Marianne. When Elinor forms an attachment for the wealthy Edward Ferrars, his family disapproves and separates them. And though Mrs. Jennings tries to match the worthy (and rich) Colonel Brandon to her, Marianne finds the dashing and fiery John Willoughby more to her taste. Both relationships described in Sense and Sensibility are sorely tried.
Kiplings greatest strength was the author of short stories. And this thematic collection of stories about the British Raj is one of the best attempts to bring together some of his best works. This includes The Man Who Will Be King, The Phantom Rickshaw, and many other favorites. But, first of all, this is connected with several short stories of Kipling about three military men in the army, Mulvani, Lirida and Other.
Another great spy novel from the british author E. Phillips Oppenheim who achieved worldwide fame with his thrilling novels and short stories concerning international espionage and intrigue. This one is a connected collection of short stories about the leader of a secret society pledged to protect England and their German adversary. This novel is an Oppenheim classic from 1919 about a high society villain: characteristic of Oppenheims typical works, with the characters living in luxury, and a very flowing and exact story. Story is set just prior to WWI and is interesting on several levels. Oppenheim builds on the English mentality before WWI and how many of the English just did not believe in a threat from Germany.
Ród Rodrigandów (Tom 17). Ród Rodrigandów. Zmierzch cesarza
Bohaterowie wracają do Europy.
The doctor must earn some money to repay the sailor for the boat he borrowed and subsequently smashed. He and his friends go to the circus to show off the Pushmi-pullyu at six pence a pop. After some time, thanks to a series of adventures, the doctor ends up managing the circus itself, and it seems that everything ends safely... They may even make enough money to pay the sailor one day.
When Lord Wolfenden saw, in the supper-room of the Milan Restaurant, a beautiful woman and became acquainted with her by saving the life of her elderly companion, the mysterious Mr. Sabin, as they leave the restaurant, he little knew the web of intrigue into which he was entering. Twists and turns galore, enjoyable descriptions about the upper-crust and by-gone days. Mr. Oppenheim can be depended upon to give his plots that turn which is as admirable as it is unexpected, and this is one of the best of his many good and exciting books. It was largely the success of his first spy novel, Mysterious Mr. Sabin, that enabled Oppenheim to relinquish control over the family business and devote himself to a full-time writing career.
Aleksandr Siergiejewicz Gribojedow
The Gilded Age. A Tale of Today
Mark Twain, Charles Dudley Warner
The book reflects the state of 19th-century society in the United States votes in the Senate and Congress are bought and sold, all this is carefully hidden and masked. The curse of the Tennessee land, which could but did not enrich the young people who are the heirs of this land, is largely activated by the heirs themselves typical Americans of that time, who want to quickly make a fortune.
Steve Costigan. Fighting Sailor
Robert E. Howard best known for his contributions to the extremely popular sword and sorcery genre of fiction. Howards writings became more successful posthumously and he created legendary characters such as Conan the Barbarian and Solomon Kane. Though much better known for his fantasies, Howard wrote more about the humorous escapades of Sailor Steve Costigan and his bulldog Mike than any of his other characters. In a unique Texas voice, the unreliable narrator Costigan recounts his adventures with the crew of the tramp steamer Sea Girl. He roamed the 1930s Asiatic sea, looking for boxing contests and other trouble. Like Howards other turbulent heroes, from Conan to Black Turlogh, Sailor Steve is always ready to wade into a fight, whether to uphold the honor of the fleet or to win a kiss from a beautiful woman. This collection includes the following: The Pit of the Serpent, Breed of Battle, Sailors Grudge, and many more.
Like most of the later ones even though this one is called Sanders it very much stars Lieutenant Augustus Bones Tibbetts. Employing his unique style of innocent and endearing humor, Bones has written to the newspapers The Surrey Star and The Middlesex Plain Dealer inviting the Foreign Secretary to pay a visit to the African territories which they administer. It is against the regulations and his boss Hamilton is furious. While world powers vie for colonial honors, Sanders and his assistants attempt to administer an uneasy peace in a climate of ju-ju and witch doctors, and all the while Bosambo, chief of the Ochori, watches closely. Sanders should be on the must-read list of every action-adventure junkie.
The God of His Fathers and Other Stories
A white man bought an Indian woman as a wife. Bought without any romantic feelings, bought for help. The girl did her job: cooked, fed dogs, paved the way for teams. And the point is not in servile worship of the master, but in the fact that she saw in her husband an honest and courageous man trying to save other people from hunger and cold. They hoped for him, and she, at the cost of her life, helped her husband keep her word.
Often considered one of the first mystery novels, The Woman In White follows protagonist Walter Hartright, an art teacher, as he has a mysterious late night encounter on a London street with a lost woman, dressed all in white, who he later finds out had escaped from an asylum. The figure of this woman and the words they exchanged during their meeting come to haunt Walter, even as he accepts a job at Limmeridge House outside of London to instruct heiress Laura Farlie in art. Walter soon recognizes the astonishing resemblance between Laura and The Woman In White, and finds out that the mystery woman also used to live near Limmeridge and has connections to the Farlie family. A tragic, haunting tale about mistaken identities, unbelievable selfishness and cruelty, bust also true love and persevering friendship. A true classic.
Often in the stories written by Fred M. White the main character is mysterious. The model of such a hero is George Verily, Ex-Company Sergeant-Major. He was madly in love with his maid. However, he could not even decide on the first step. Some of the events that occurred recently in front of George Verili made him believe that an unforeseen circumstance could happen...
Małżeństwo, do którego należała tytułowa kamizelka, przyjechało do warszawskiej kamienicy na początku kwietnia. Ludzie ci wstawali wczesnym rankiem, pili herbatę z blaszanego samowaru, razem wychodzili do pracy. Ona na lekcje do szkoły, on do biura. Byli ludźmi młodymi, spokojnymi. Żona szczupła, lubiła krawiectwo; mąż tęgi i zapracowany.
Money often changes peoples lives. If you inherited a substantial amount of money would it change yours? Would you work or quit your job? Would you feel entitled to various privileges because of your wealth? Would you behave differently? These and other issues are the subject of the English novel Bleak House by Charles Dickens. Bleak House, like many of Dickens writings, is about various social issues. Bleak House is a satirical story about Dickens view of the British judiciary system. Both Esther Summerson, one of the characters in the story, and a separate third person narrator, tell the story. Esther speaks about the experiences of her life, and the third person narrator speaks about the experiences of some of the people of the town.
Warm, brilliant, and cloudless was the July noon. Beneath the summer sun the broad, shallow waters of the Meuse sparkled as they rippled swiftly onward through the deep, winding valley of grey rocks and cool woods on their way from the mountains of Lorraine, through peaceful, prosperous Belgium, towards the sea.
Ellis Parker Butler (1869-1937) was a contemporary of many big names in American fiction straddling the 19th and 20th centuries, but today hes almost completely forgotten. The selections in Mike Flannery On Duty and Off book include three humorous stories, Just Like a Cat, The Three Hundred and Fleas Will Be Fleas, by this American humorist, whose first success, Pigs is Pigs (1906), remained his greatest. Nevertheless, the Mike Flannery stories are among his best. Just Like a Cat is a story of Mikes problems when a dead cat arrives at the express office where he works. Mike tries to think of a word to replace dead in his report and that sets off a series of problems for him. The further stories of Mike Flannery, a character made famous as the agent of the Interurban Express Company in Butlers short story, Pigs is Pigs.
Poglądy księdza Hieronima Coignarda
W Poglądach księdza Hieronima Coignarda Anatole France noblista, erudyta i bibliofil daje wyraz własnych przekonań na temat instytucji życia publicznego, wymiaru sprawiedliwości i ludzkich postaw.
The Finer Grain a collection of small stories. The A Round of Visits is a thoughtful tragedy that triggered the opening of Watch and Trusteeship. The Bench of Desolation, located in an English seaside town, is a touching story of reconciliation after some very offensive and bitter misunderstandings.
Lee Garrison, a solitary fence rider in the southwest, is entranced with stories he has read of daring medieval adventures. Then a dying Indian stumbles into his camp, telling of a magnificent wild mustang called Moonshine. Garrison pursues the elusive horse across the plains on a quest of self-discovery. The chase would lead him across thousands of miles of plains, deserts, and rivers, and before his quest had ended, Lee Garrison would learn the meaning of hope and the cost of dreams. And he would be forced to make a terrible, shattering decision - a decision that might destroy him. Highly recommended, especially for those who love the Old Western genre.
