Powstały one jako krytyka Filipa II, macedońskiego króla prowadzącego zaborczą politykę zagrażającą niepodległości Grecji. Demostenes wywierał wpływ na politykę Filipa oraz zagrzewał Greków do stawiania oporu. W tzw. mowach olintyńskich nakłonił Ateńczyków do pomocy miastu Olint, zagrożonemu przez działania króla Filipa, pomoc jednak nadeszła zbyt późno.
