Diaboliada. Powieść o tym, jak bliźniacy zgubili referenta

Michaił Bułhakow

Bułhakow odmalowuje biurokratyczną sowiecką rzeczywistość, wychodząc od humoru prowadzącego aż do absurdu, kończąc na pesymistycznym, tragicznym obrazie radzieckich realiów. Nasilenie dziwaczności, w którą uwikłany jest sowiecki człowiek, budzi skrajne emocje od chęci walki, która szybko przytłacza beznadzieją, aż do całkowitej uległości i bezradności wobec mechanizmów radzieckiej administracji.

Fenton Ash

The works of Fenton Ash are highly prized among bibliophile collectors of classic sci-fi and fantasy. Above the Dark Circus

Hugh Walpole

This novel is served with a psychological detective dressing. In reality, this is a mixture of experiences, feelings and thoughts of the protagonist, describing events that in any case should end in tragedy. This is not hidden from the very beginning. Everything that happens is written very atmospheric, gradually thickening events to an inevitable outcome.

Vampir. Ein verwilderter Roman in Fetzen und Farben

Hanns Heinz Ewers

E. Phillips Oppenheim

Lord Evelyn and a group of seven like-minded esthetes make up The Ghosts a cabal of social arbiters, of whom the mere mention is regarded as a faux pas. They are imbued with almost mystical power in setting tastes and trends and behavior for the members of Society in London in 1908. Desperate for stimulation The Ghosts embark on a risky program of wealth redistribution... other peoples wealth. Meanwhile, a spurned aspirant to their club, the American debutante Sophy Van Heldt, seeks revenge against them. Originally published in 1908 as The Ghosts of Society this intriguing novel carries the theme of social boredom, ennui, and sensation craving which entranced late Victorian Europe in the pre-war period.

The Time Machine

Herbert George Wells

Decades ahead of his time, H.G. Wells leaps beyond the bounds of conventional imagination to tell the story of the Time Traveler. A seminal and hugely imaginative work of early science fiction, H.G. Wellss The Time Machine is the first and greatest modern portrayal of time-travel and definitely a spiritual ancestor of every time travel story since. The book introduces a scientist who uses a Time Machine to be transferred into the age of a slowly dying earth. Humans have been separated by time, genetics, wars and change of their habitats into two different races, the Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks. After narrowly escaping from the Morlocks, the Time Traveller undertakes another journey even further into the future where he finds the earth growing bitterly cold as the heat and energy of the sun wane. Horrified, he returns to the present, but soon departs again on his final journey. The Time Machine examines the age-old questions of humankinds ultimate destiny and the role we play in shaping it.

Typhoon

Joseph Conrad

First published in 1902, Typhoon can be easily passed as pre-twentieth century literature. Its a short story depicting a ship experiencing a terribly destructive typhoon and coming out of it, but not without coming inch-close to death. Typhoon is a classic sea yarn, possibly based upon Conrads actual experience of seamans life, and probably on a real incident aboard of the real steamer John P. Best. One of the major themes of the novella is the contrast between Conrads characters who are imaginative men aware of the larger issues of life and conscious of the potential for disaster and the literal minded and relatively unaware Captain MacWhirr. MacWhirr is a hard working captain devoted to routine and loyal to the needs of the Nan-Shan and the interests of her owners. The novella classically evokes the seafaring life at the turn of the century. While Macwhirr, who, according to Conrad, never walked on this Earth is emotionally estranged from his family and crew, and though he refuses to consider an alternate course to skirt the typhoon, his indomitable will in the face of a superior natural force elicits grudging admiration.

Double Dan

Edgar Wallace

Various people had tried, and failed, to break the strong will of Diana Ford. Her lawyers, for instance, thought they could dissuade her from coming to England. Her cousin, Gordon Salisbury, found she had moved in as a permanent houseguest, uninvited and defiant of convention. So, it was not surprising that when she suspected Gordon of being the victim of a clever impersonation, Diana should take charge. Recommended for Edgar Wallace fans and fans of old-time, classic crime thrillers. Edgar Wallace was one of the most popular and prolific authors of his era.
