Monografia ta jest kontynuacją książki Słowenia pod rządami Tity (1945–1980). W cieniu Jugosławii (Kraków 2017) i stanowi z nią spójną całość. Wszystkie prace naukowe autora dotyczące Słowenii powstały w ramach badań prowadzonych na Wydziale Humanistyczno-Społecznym Akademii Techniczno-Humanistycznej w Bielsku-Białej (ATH). Zasadniczym zamiarem niniejszej publikacji było przedstawienie dziejów Słowenii w okresie rozpadu Jugosławii. Tutaj początkową cezurę wyznacza data śmierci Josipa Broz Tity, a końcową moment secesji, wojny dziesięciodniowej i międzynarodowego uznania niepodległej Słowenii.   Książka została przede wszystkim oparta na opublikowanych słoweńskich materiałach naukowych. Nieodzowne było także sięgnięcie do zasobów historiografii dawnej Jugosławii, jak również państw współczesnych: Chorwacji, Serbii, Bośni i Hercegowiny oraz Czarnogóry. W dużym stopniu przywołano także publikacje rosyjskie, niemieckie i anglosaskie. To samo dotyczy dorobku polskiej nauki.    Piotr Żurek – dr hab., profesor nadzwyczajny Akademii Techniczno-Humanistycznej w Bielsku-Białej. Historyk i slawista, autor licznych publikacji i referatów konferencyjnych z zakresu dziejów Słowiańszczyzny i Bałkanów. Od szeregu lat współpracuje z wieloma zagranicznymi ośrodkami naukowymi, przede wszystkim w Chorwacji, Serbii oraz Słowenii. Ostatnio w pracy badawczej zajmuje się historią Jugosławii i stosunków polsko-jugosłowiańskich w XX wieku.

The Brigand (1927) is a collection of a dozen fast-paced, frothy crime capers set in a Britain still reeling from 1926s General Strike. An excellent collection of connected short stories all about likeable conman Anthony Newton. Newton returning from the Great War and unable to find employment decides start redistributing wealth in his own way. Deprived of a legal source of income and faced with homelessness and hunger he decides to become a brigand a sort of modern-day Robin Hood and trick rich capitalists into parting with their ill-gotten gains. Some of the ruses are clever, some only mildly interesting. This effectively boils down to a series of elaborate cons and heists with crooked and corrupt capitalists as his targets.

Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was a prolific British crime writer, journalist and playwright, who wrote 175 novels, 24 plays, and countless articles in newspapers and journals. Over 160 films have been made of his novels, more than any other author. In the 1920s, one of Wallaces publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him. Silinski is one of Edgar Wallaces more over-the-top master fiends. He could teach Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley something about stock manipulation. Silinski and a group of gangster financiers make havoc with the markets, cause devastating financial turmoil. The action becomes ever more outrageous from there.

„Tłumaczy się […], bo ma się aspiracje, żeby być tłumaczem.1” Przywołana teza to jedna z możliwych odpowiedzi na pytanie: „Dlaczego tłumaczymy?”. Jeśli ktoś do bycia tłumaczem aspiruje, oznacza to, że zawód ten (czy lepiej „rola”) jest czymś godnym podziwu i szacunku, szlachetnym, lecz także czymś wymagającym trudu, niełatwym. Wielu translatologów i tłumaczy zapewne życzyłoby sobie, aby tak właśnie postrzegano ich pracę. I chyba faktycznie ostatnimi czasy tłumacz (nie tylko wśród osób tak czy inaczej zaangażowanych zawodowo w translatorykę) zyskał na znaczeniu (czy jednak doczekał się właściwego uznania?)2. Jeśli tłumaczenie to kwestia aspiracji, to znaczy, że powodem, dla którego podejmuje się ów trud, mogą być między innymi prestiż i ambicja. Tak jak w wypadku Stanisława Barańczaka, którego motywowała do pracy chęć pokazania, że potrafi przetłumaczyć lepiej niż poprzednik3. Jednak aspirowanie oznacza także, że „prawdziwym” tłumaczem się nie jest. Konstatacja ta w pewnym sensie odnosi się do każdego tłumacza i wszystkich tłumaczeń ze względu na ontologię przekładu4. Na czym zaś polegać może wzniosłość tłumaczenia? Zapewne przejawia się ona w pojmowaniu przekładu w kategoriach służby (służymy kulturze oryginału, rozpowszechniając jej dzieła, kulturze rodzimej — wzbogacając ją; budujemy porozumienie), lecz także w przypisywaniu mu wyższych celów „ludzkich”5 i filozoficznych (poszerzanie horyzontów świata — L. Wittgenstein; odkrycie Innego, (po)rozumienie i (za)-istnienie w interpretacyjnym geście — hermeneutyka, P. Ricoeur; metafizyczne odkrywanie „czystego języka” — W. Benjamin; „pisanie” tłumacza przez przekład, a nie przekładu przez tłumacza — dekonstrukcjonizm) oraz artystycznych (np. tłumaczenie jako twórczość, co sugerował już Roman Jakobson, nestor przekładoznawstwa, a także Jiří Levý czy Anna Legeżyńska). Zdaniem Gideona Toury’ego, przekładamy w odpowiedzi na potrzeby kultury docelowej, wypełniając istniejące w niej luki.
