Vernon Milbourne, orphaned since childhood and haunted by a recurring dream, is friends with the protective lawyer and MP Sir Edward Leithen. An Aegean cruise takes them to the mysterious island of Plakos, where Vernon is fascinated by the islands myths. Local superstitions turn to menace as Vernons encounter with a beautiful woman results in obsession and adventure. The Dancing Floor centres on a young English woman, Kore Arabin, who inherits a house on a remote Greek island. Sadly for Kore the locals regard her as a witch, responsible for the failure of their crops, and become convinced she must be sacrificed in order to ensure better harvests in the coming years. Sir Edward Leithen and Vernon Milburne must save her before the islanders sacrifice her. Sir Edward Leithen is a character that features prominently in several other John Buchan novels, including The Power-House, The Gap in the Curtain and others.

It was attempt by Conan Doyle to present the story of the Puritans in a more favorable light than generally thought of in England at the time the book was written a historical romance about the Monmouth rebellion and Hanging Judge Jeffries told by a humble adherent of the Duke of Monmouth the whole story of the rising in Somerset, the triumphant advance towards Bristol and Bath, and the tragic rout at Sedgemoor (1685).

American lawyer and writer, Arthur Cheney Train, also called Arthur Chesney Train, was a prolific author of legal thrillers. His most popular work featured recurring fictional lawyer Mr. Ephraim Tutt who became the best known lawyer in America, particularly after the appearance of Yankee Lawyer, an immensely popular book that purported to be Tutts autobiography. Published in 1923, these short stories take place in the ethnic, racial, social melting pot of early Twentieth-Century New York. More humorous cases starring Ephraim Tutt, a very sharp old lawyer who stands for justice, and his battles with those who dont. Mr. Tutts genial tolerance for the denizens of New York sharply contrasts with the hostility he bears towards the real villains of these stories: the judges and prosecutors who would abrogate justice for the sake of their political ambitions. A must read for fans of mysteries and also lawyers.
