Red Belts

Hugh Pendexter

The whole story revolves around the Northern Valley, which at the end of the 18th century had a great debt for the state, about 5 million. This noble kingdom, from which the state of Tennessee was to be created, was conquered by the confiscation and rifles of the settlers over the mountains and cost North Carolina neither blood nor money. The republic was too young to develop. This is a historic event for North Carolina. How could she get out of this situation?

The Refugees

Arthur Conan Doyle

A brilliant adventure tale of life in the Court of Louis XIV and of Canada under French rule... and Huguenot persecution The Refugees is set in both 17th Century France and in the wilds of North America. Although Doyle wasnt a Christian, he writes with a great deal of sympathy as he describes the plight of French Protestants in the late 17th century. The year is 1690 and the De Catinat family is facing disaster. Because they are Huguenots, French Protestants, Louis XIV has stripped the family of their wealth, titles and soon, in all likelihood, their lives. They are rescued, however, by an American who is visiting Paris. He arranges for them to escape to the New World, but their troubles are just beginning. Along the way we visit the inner sanctum of King Louis palace, travel through the ice-berg infested waters of the north Atlantic sea, and journey in the wilderness of New France.

Robur the Conqueror

Jules Verne

The stolen trinity of American heroes flies around the globe on a screw machine heavier than air: from Philadelphia through Canada and the Far West to Japan, China, India; through Russia, Europe, Africa and the South Pole to the Pacific Ocean. Due to the fact that the ship Albatross moves at breakneck speed, terrestrial landscapes are flashed before the reader in passing. The work has an intrigue that unfolds in a rather interesting way, as well as a very unpredictable ending.

Out O Luck. Biltmore Oswald Very Much at Sea

Thorne Smith

James Thorne Smith, Jr. was an American writer of humorous supernatural fantasy fiction under the byline Thorne Smith. He is best known today for the two Topper novels, comic fantasy fiction involving sex, much drinking and supernatural transformations. Smiths literary debut was Biltmore Oswald (1918), the comic fictional diary of a hapless naval recruit, drawing heavily on wartime experience with the Navy. Episodes had featured in Broadside. The book sold well enough to allow the appearance of a sequel, Out o Luck (1919). The book continues hapless sailor Oswalds exploits in diary form throughout 1918 and the armistice and up to his eventual demobilization. Many of the entries have little or nothing to do with navy life and some of the best could easily stand alone as short stories, the best of which has Oswald looking for a bath and ending up in a duel.

The Happy Average

Brand Whitlock

The Happy Average is a novel of far more genuine merit than Mr. Whitlocks former works. It is a realistic story of commonplace life in a small Ohio town, the realism being of that wholesome sort which portrays the every-day existence, the small joys and sorrows, of the average men and women of the average Western village. The story deals with the struggles of the hero, Glenn Marley, a young man of very ordinary ability, to win a place in the legal profession and at the same time earn enough money to enable him to marry the girl (Lavinia Blair) of his choice, who is the daughter of Judge Blair, one of the leading citizens of the town. The story, however is a faithful picture of life in a conservative Western town and will appeal to those who enjoy the simple recital of unexciting events.
