Thorne Smith

James Thorne Smith, Jr. was an American writer of humorous supernatural fantasy fiction under the byline Thorne Smith. He is best known today for the two Topper novels, comic fantasy fiction involving sex, much drinking and supernatural transformations. Smiths literary debut was Biltmore Oswald (1918), the comic fictional diary of a hapless naval recruit, drawing heavily on wartime experience with the Navy. Episodes had featured in Broadside. The book sold well enough to allow the appearance of a sequel, Out o Luck (1919). The book continues hapless sailor Oswalds exploits in diary form throughout 1918 and the armistice and up to his eventual demobilization. Many of the entries have little or nothing to do with navy life and some of the best could easily stand alone as short stories, the best of which has Oswald looking for a bath and ending up in a duel.

The Happy Average

The Happy Average is a novel of far more genuine merit than Mr. Whitlocks former works. It is a realistic story of commonplace life in a small Ohio town, the realism being of that wholesome sort which portrays the every-day existence, the small joys and sorrows, of the average men and women of the average Western village. The story deals with the struggles of the hero, Glenn Marley, a young man of very ordinary ability, to win a place in the legal profession and at the same time earn enough money to enable him to marry the girl (Lavinia Blair) of his choice, who is the daughter of Judge Blair, one of the leading citizens of the town. The story, however is a faithful picture of life in a conservative Western town and will appeal to those who enjoy the simple recital of unexciting events.

Richard, having his own reasoning, stops the beginning of the battle and expels both! After the death of his father, Heinrich decides to return to his name and that which belongs to him by right. However, something went wrong.

Sieger des Fluges ist derjenige, der seinen Startpunkt zuerst wieder erreicht. Es gibt nur einen Sieger und nur einen Preis. Neben vielen Ländern beteiligen sich auch die deutschen Eggerth-Werke mit ihrer Seeschwalbe am Wettflug. Leider versuchen Japan und Russland statt mit schnellen, verlässlichen Flugzeugen lieber durch heimtückische Sabotageakte ans Ziel zu gelangen. Doch sie haben nicht mit der weisen Voraussicht von Professor Eggerth gerechnet.

Franz Kafka

Franz Kafka wurde am 3. Juli 1883 in Prag geboren und starb am 3. Juni 1924. Er zählt zu den bedeutendsten Autoren deutschsprachiger Literatur und veröffentlichte neben seinen Romanen eine Vielzahl von Erzählungen. Betrachtung ist ein Sammelband mit 18 meist kurzen Prosatexten von Franz Kafka, der Ende 1912 erschienen ist. Bereits 1908 waren acht der Prosastücke mit dem Obertitel Betrachtung in der Zeitschrift Hyperion veröffentlicht worden. In Betrachtung werden Themen dargestellt, die Kafka auch im Weiteren immer wieder aufgriff, nämlich jugendliche Geselligkeit, zwischenmenschliche Abgrenzung, Junggeselleneinsamkeit und die Mühen des Kaufmannsdaseins.

Two gunslingers known as Jingo and the Parson form a two-man army in Tower Creek to deal with the dangerous Rankin brothers in a conflict over a dishonest poker game. Wally Rankin, a gambler, is one of the players and because he is losing to Jingo, resorts to marking the cards. Jingo spots the action and accuses Wally Rankin of cheating. In the ensuing gun fight, Wally is shot in both shoulders. Subsequently, the sheriff advices Jingo that Wallys older brother will probably be hunting for him. A game of cat and mouse begins. One of many recommended westerns by Frederick Schiller Faust.

The Millionaire Baby

Was the little girl, who appears to have been everybodys darling, kidnapped for money? Nobody comes forward asking for a ransom. Did she sneak down to the river and drown? In The Millionaire Baby, a young detective Mr. Trevitt has more than one reason for desperately wanting to solve the mysterious case of little Gwendolen, a millionaires daughter who missed since the afternoon of August the 16th from right under the nose of her nurse. Our detective soon meets the widow living next door, a close friend of the bereft mother. Something does not quite add up with neither mother nor neighbor but then there are several other characters offering clues. Or are they red herrings?
