A Certain Dr. Thorndyke

John Osborne is a young gentleman who has left England for some, as of yet, unknown reason. He settles in Adaffia, an ends-of-the-earth type of town on the Gold Coast. Almost immediately he gets into a fight defending the only other white man in town, a drunken trader. And we see that Osborne is a tremendous fighter skilled at ju-jitsu, boxing, wrestling and strategy. These skills will come into play again and again, in a mutiny, a rebellion and other struggles with formidable opponents. His adventures at one point throw him into the company of a willful young lady who has an appetite for danger, and she and Osborne fall in love. Meanwhile back in England, a certain Dr. Thorndyke is investigating the crime that Osborne is supposed to have committed. This second half of the book is just as much fun as the first, involving bizarre searches for clues and meticulous examinations of minutiae, from mustache hairs to wormwood dust.

Finally, he abandons the world of Europeans altogether and heads upriver to a small Malay village. Even there, however, he finds he cannot escape the demands of his sensitive moral feelings and must prove to himself that he is not a coward.

Utwór dramatyczny należący do cyklu dramatów Dziady. Powstawał w latach 18201821 w Kownie. Ze względu na miejsce powstania niekiedy określany mianem Dziadów wileńsko-kowieńskich. Akcja utworu toczy się w Dzień Zaduszny. Nocą, w kaplicy zebrała się grupa ludzi z pobliskiej wioski. Trwa ludowy obrzęd Dziadów, któremu przewodniczy Guślarz. Zebrani wzywają kolejno dusze czyśćcowe. Na ich wezwanie przybywają trzy rodzaje duchów: lekkie, ciężkie i pośrednie. Wieśniacy starają się w miarę swoich możliwości ulżyć cierpieniu pojawiających się duchów. Gdy obrzęd dobiega końca, nieoczekiwanie zjawia się jednak kolejny duch, który nie reaguje na wezwania i przekleństwa Guślarza i reszty... Druga część Dziadów to utwór o charakterze moralnym. Reprezentowana tu moralność wynika z ludowych przekonań o winie i karze. Określona kategoria grzechów pociąga za sobą rodzaj kary. Cierpiącym duszom należy pomóc w osiągnięciu zbawienia. Jest to wynikiem wierzeń prostych ludzi w możliwość kontaktów ze światem nadprzyrodzonym. Wiarę tę włączyli do swego programu romantycy.

The characterisation and the authors painting of the landscapes are particularly well done, which allows the reader to become unknowingly immersed in the story.
