At this point the plot changes to encompass the arrival of Mr. Mirakel, a mysterious, wealthy, well-connected personage who insinuates himself in the company. Thereafter, the book becomes a strange fantasy about a remote land of tropical perfection where war, and rumors of war, are unknown!
