The White Company

The White Company is the story of Alleyne Edricsons quest to win the hand of his lady love, the Lady Maud Loring. The place is England and the Continent, the year is 1366 during the reign of the King of the English, Edward III, and his realm is twenty-nine years into The Hundred Years War with France. Setting off on his adventures, he finds himself part of the White Company a group of mercenary archers en route to France. A roistering tale of knight-errantry follows, with Alleynes quest to justify himself and his love the focus of the piece. The White Company is a very well researched novel, in which many historical characters appear to lend credence to the narrative and the book ends on a predictably happy ending.

The anthology is composed of six short stories, mysteries investigated by the investigator Martin Hewitt, and narrated by his friend, Colonel Brett. An artists work is vindictively vandalized, and the artist is found murdered in his smoking room. Gold bullion totaling L10,000 mysteriously vanishes from the ill-fated steamship Nicobar as it sinks en route to Plymouth. A clerk disappears from a large London bank along with a rather substantial amount of the companys money. A lunatic Frenchman, discovered beaten and bloody in the street, screams in terror when offered a loaf of bread. The detective Martin Hewitt is on the case.

A Secret Service is a spy story. Detective Moore fights with Russian seducers and German spies. All events take place before the Second World War. The plot, as always, is obsolete, but interesting for readers.

The Jewel of Seven Stars follows the attempts to revive a five-thousand-year-old Egyptian queen. The story opens with London barrister Malcolm Ross receiving a late-night summons to the home of Margaret Trelawney. Margarets father, an Egyptologist, is comatose, and an attempt has been made on his life, or so it seems. His house, and especially his vast bedroom, is a veritable museum, with Egyptian artifacts, from mummies to sarcophagi, making for a strange, sinister setting. Weird things happen in the house which explores the possibility of the magic of mummies.
