In the Penal Colony

"In the Penal Colony" is a short story by Franz Kafka. The story is set in an unnamed penal colony. As in some of Kafka's other writings, the narrator in this story seems detached from, or perhaps numbed by, events that one would normally expect to be registered with horror. "In the Penal Colony" describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the sentence of the condemned prisoner on his skin before letting him die, all in the course of twelve hours. As the plot unfolds, the reader learns more and more about the machine, including its origin and original justification.

”Tytus Andronikus” to jedna z pierwszych tragedii Williama Shakespeare’a w pięciu aktach powstała w latach 90. XVI wieku. Akcja tragedii rozpoczyna się w senacie, w którym toczy się dyskusja na temat sukcesji tronu po zmarłym Cesarzu. Aspirują do niego Saturninus, syn cesarza, i jego młodszy brat Basjanus. Po chwili dyskusji zgadzają się, że najlepszym rozwiązaniem będzie oddanie tronu powracającemu do Rzymu triumfującemu wodzowi Tytusowi Andronikusowi. Ten jednak odmawia przejęcia tego zaszczytu ze względu na swój zaawansowany wiek i sugeruje przejęcie tronu przez Saturninusa. Nowy cesarz wybiera sobie na żonę córkę Tytusa, Lawinię. Andronikus przystaje na to z radością. Do ślubu jednak nie dochodzi, gdyż Lawinia zostaje porwana przez swojego poprzedniego narzeczonego i brata cesarza, Basjanusa.
