His thoughts turn to blackmail, since he assumes the wrongful heirs would pay a high price to hang onto their wealth. Pratts personal hero is the subtle, wily diplomat Talleyrand. Self-interest is Pratts guiding principle. We watch him pondering, planning and scheming his way through one complication after another. This is a gripping detective story, with many twists and turns, based in Edwardian England. It is definitely recommended for a wide circle of readers who want to have a couple of hours of fascinating reading.

Dr.Thornedykes methods of detection are characterised by investigations of apparently irrelevant facts and lengthy explanations of his train of hypothetical reasoning. In this novel, Dr. Thorndykes ability to identify fish scales and rope material sets his investigation in motion. The crime is the murder of an aristocrat staged to look like a suicide. There are really two stories alternating, which eventually become one. We watch Dr. Thorndyke follow a thin and improbable trail of forensic evidence. And we observe the seemingly unrelated adventures of a stationers delivery boy, who innocently gets in the way of a cutthroat gang. Dr. Thorndyke calls Jasper after hearing his amazing story. The complex, gripping and rather romantic plot once again demonstrates the greatness of A. Austin Freeman as a writer of totally engaging and original crime fiction.

Inspired by accusations of venality leveled at the men who captured Major Andre (Benedict Arnolds co-conspirator, executed for espionage in 1780), Coopers novel centers on Harry Birch, a common man wrongly suspected by well-born Patriots of being a spy for the British. Even George Washington, who supports Birch, misreads the man, and when Washington offers him payment for information vital to the Patriots cause, Birch scorns the money and asserts that his action were motivated not by financial reward, but by his devotion to the fight for independence. Peopled with memorable characters, some of them real life heroes like George Washington, The Spy by James Fenimore Cooper is a great blend of fact and historical fiction, constructed on a magnificent scale.

Wygłasza więc do warszawskich lekarzy płomienną mowę na temat uwłaczających ludzkiej godności warunków życia biedoty i postuluje jako obowiązek lekarzy pracę charytatywną wśród potrzebujących. Nie znajduje jednak zrozumienia w środowisku. Wyjeżdża do kurortu w Cisach i obejmuje tam posadę lekarza sanatoryjnego. W Cisach ponownie spotyka panią Niewadzką i zakochuje się w Joasi Podborskiej. Na skutek awantury z kierownictwem sanatorium opuszcza Cisy. Powieść osadzona jest w realiach końca XIX wieku i pokazuje idee pracy dla ludu oraz osobistego poświęcenia.
