Podczas kolejnej podróży statek zostaje napadnięty, a Robinson, wraz z innymi, wzięty do niewoli mauretańskiej, z której po dwóch latach ucieka. Płynie do Brazylii, gdzie staje się plantatorem. 30 września 1659, podczas wyprawy po niewolników, statek rozbija się. Robinson jest jedynym ocalałym. Trafia na bezludną wyspę, gdzie przyjdzie mu spędzić następne 28 lat. Postać Robinsona Crusoe była wzorowana na prawdziwych losach Aleksandra Selkirka, szkockiego żeglarza, który w latach 1704-1709 spędził cztery lata na wyspie Más a Tierra (obecnie wyspa Robinson Crusoe), u wybrzeży Chile.
