Wyróżniają się także obrazy życia czy to wielkomiejskiego Paryża, czy prowincjonalnej galicyjskiej Posuchy oraz obrazy wojny, kreślone z pasją wyrażającą antywojenny protest pisarza. Niektóre części utworu utrzymane są w poetyce drapieżnego naturalizmu.
