Na pierwszym istotne tematy romantycznej poezji (skupione wokół dwóch centrów – Bytu i podmiotowości) analizowane są w perspektywie wyobraźni poetyckiej, której zmodyfikowane i rozwinięte instrumentarium umożliwiło zbadanie różnorodnej i złożonej problematyki. Na drugim poziomie owo badanie romantycznych tematów pozwoliło wydobyć i opisać istotne i indywidualne rysy samej romantycznej wyobraźni. W części pierwszej książki (Ja w przestrzeniach Bytu) zbadane i opisane zostały stabilne (metafizyczne) i dynamiczne modele bytowości poezji Słowackiego i Mickiewicza. Ta fenomenologia romantycznego Bytu dopełniona została interpretacją zła – jako drugiej, ciemnej strony Bytu – w poezji Mickiewicza. Część druga (Przestrzenie Ja) zawiera rozpoznanie i opisanie niestandardowych modeli podmiotowości romantycznej, wykraczającej poza dotychczasowe ujęcia. W centrum znalazła się interpretacja późnej poezji Mickiewicza i Słowackiego. Całość dopełniona została analizami świata wewnętrznego i kształtów romantycznej poezji mistycznej.
