When the emperor Valentinian III murdered the general Flavius Aetius, it has been observed that he had 'cut his right hand with his left', and the story of the fall of the 'last Roman' has been put in the greater context of the subsequent dissolution of the Roman Empire in the West. However, a similar deed committed by the emperor Leo in the East in 471, when he ordered the killing of the general Aspar, certainly did not gain such a legendary status. The underappreciated story of the survival of the Eastern Roman Empire in the turmoil of the fifth century is however no less dramatic, and the role that powerful military leaders played in those events was certainly paramount. This publication aims to reconstruct the involvement of the Eastern Roman military elite in various matters of the state on the wider background of political history marked by the reigns of the emperors Theodosius II (408-450), Marcian (450-457), and Leo I (457-474). On its pages, the author presents the history of the numerous wars in which the Empire found itself entangled in during that uneasy time, as well as the periods of conflict and cooperation between the generals and the emperors. The focus is not only on the military elite as a group, but also on outstanding individuals, such as generals Plintha, Flavius Zeno, Aspar or Zeno-Tarasikodissa, the aforementioned emperors and their civilian advisors. The result is a comprehensive study and a novel interpretation of the nearly seven decades of turmoil that, contrary to what happened in the West, curiously did not result in the collapse of the Eastern Roman state; perhaps, as the author argues, in no small part due to those military leaders, who were serving and protecting it.

When I was planning my approximately week-long trip to Switzerland, my main goal was to get to know the country as much as possible, and as a lover of landscapes, to reach areas with breathtaking panoramas. So little time, so many places to see. What should you choose? How does one make the most of a trip to fully enjoy the unique beauty of this country? How can you avoid the constant exhaustion of moving from one place of accommodation to the next in order to see different corners of Switzerland? How can this be done on a moderate budget? How can you make sure that people of all ages will enjoy themselves on the trip? The prepared program is based on these very principles. It is dedicated to family trips, trips with a group of friends or even solo adventures, in your own or rented car. In this guide, you won't find detailed information dedicated to skiers. However, if you wish to take advantage of the ski slopes during your stay (after all, Switzerland is a paradise for skiers), you will be able to modify the proposed program in such a way that will allow you to do so, as I will take you to places which offer that opportunity. I want to show you breathtaking views of four-thousanders of the Alps, stunning regardless of the season, places inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, such as the Eiger, MOnch, and Jungfrau massifs, the glacial landscape around the longest glacier in the Alps, Aletsch Glacier, and the beautiful scenery filled with lakes and waterfalls. I will take you on a walk across a spectacular suspension bridge (or even several, if you wish), you will enter a glacier, much like Kay and Gerda entered the Snow Queen's palace, and you'll wander through the corridors of a dragon's cave. You will visit historical castles nestled in the Alpine landscape, and a friendly cow named Cerise, or Cherry, will guide you through the Gruyere Museum, a place created for cheese enthusiasts, where you will learn about the process of making Swiss delicacies, the origin of milk, and the principles of fully natural cow feeding. I hope that this guide will be helpful not only during the trip itself, but that above all else it will relieve you of the burden of hours of searching for information regarding worthwhile places to see and essential information as well as practical details for organizing the trip. Niniejsza monografia lokuje się w dziedzinie badań nad technologią wytwarzania i wykorzystania wysokoenergetycznych impulsów pola elektromagnetycznego. Jest to bardzo szeroka dziedzina wiedzy, której początki związane są z wytwarzaniem i przesyłaniem energii elektrycznej. W obecnych czasach szybkie impulsy pola elektromagnetycznego znajdują coraz więcej nowych zastosowań. Dlatego technologie impulsowe są polem intensywnych badań naukowych i źródłem nowych rozwiązań technicznych. Praca ta nie obejmuje całego spektrum technologii impulsów wysokonapięciowych, a koncentruje się na zagadnieniu wykorzystania symulacji komputerowych do przyspieszenia i zmniejszenia kosztów procesu projektowania urządzenia generującego. Takie ograniczenie wynika po pierwsze z dostępności kilku bardzo obszernych opracowań na temat technologii impulsowych, a po drugie z braku syntetycznego opracowania pokazującego zalety i wady komputerowego wspomagania procesu projektowania urządzeń generujących. Ze względu na specyfikę problemu koncentracji i kontrolowanego wyzwolenia dużej ilości energii elektromagnetycznej w bardzo niewielkim przedziale czasu projektowanie generatorów impulsów musi uwzględniać całą złożoność zjawisk elektromagnetycznych. Pokazane tu problemy i metody ich rozwiązywania mogą znaleźć zastosowanie także w projektowaniu klasycznych generatorów udarów elektrycznych. Książka ma być przewodnikiem w zakresie stosowalności symulacji komputerowych w technologiach impulsów elektromagnetycznych. Na bazie własnych doświadczeń oraz na przykładach innych projektów autor chciałby wskazać silne i słabe strony numerycznych modeli urządzeń generujących silne i szybkie impulsy pola elektromagnetycznego, mając nadzieję, że z jednej strony pokaże to aktualny stan badań nad technicznymi rozwiązaniami urządzeń generujących, a z drugiej pozwoli efektywnie stosować metody numeryczne w technice wysokich napięć. W odróżnieniu od tradycyjnych monografii tłumaczących działanie układów generujących najczęściej tylko na podstawie uproszczonych wzorów analitycznych, w tej pracy starano się pokazać, że wykorzystanie nawet najprostszych modeli symulacyjnych pozwala także projektować elementy generatorów nawet na poziomie koncepcji. Oczywiście symulator nie zastąpi znajomości praw rządzących elektrotechniką ani intuicji projektowej, ale jest bardzo wygodnym uzupełnieniem tych elementów, pozwalającym bardzo szybko i wszechstronnie zweryfikować pomysł i zasadę działania nowo projektowanego układu, a także zdecydowanie najszybszym narzędziem pozwalającym zbadać wpływ parametrów i wariantów konstrukcji na pracę urządzenia.
