Pochodził ze szlacheckiej rodziny. W 1792 r. wstąpił do armii pruskiej i jako oficer brał udział w walkach z Francuzami. Doszedł do stopnia podporucznika, a w 1799 r. zrezygnował z kariery wojskowej i rozpoczął studia we Frankfurcie nad Odrą. Wkrótce zaręczył się z córką generała i porzucił studia, by zostać urzędnikiem. Zachorował na "melancholię", więc siostra zabrała go do Niemiec.

Stanowi on kontynuację pracy Kto czyta - nie błądzi.
